E20 sounds patriotic until you do the math. Ethanol costs ₹71/L, more than petrol, and carries about 33% less energy, yet you pay the same price and get fewer km. That's an estimated ₹88,000 crore in extra fuel spending over 3 years. Rice is sold to distilleries at ₹23/kg when it costs ₹42. India went from exporting maize to importing it. Every litre of cane ethanol uses 2,000–3,600L of water from aquifers that are already drying up. The "forex saved" is your money, spent at home at a higher price.

B.R. Shenoy stood almost alone in independent India. While the establishment cheered Nehru’s Second Five Year Plan and its Soviet-style push for heavy industry funded by deficit financing, Shenoy drawing on Hayek issued a solitary note of dissent. He warned of inflation, balance-of-payments crises, and slower growth. Events proved him right. Hayek had already explained why such planning fails. Knowledge of local conditions is dispersed among millions of people; no planner can gather or use it. Markets coordinate it through prices. *The Road to Serfdom* showed that once economic control is accepted, political freedom erodes. India’s long stagnation until 1991 confirmed both men. Their ideas were treated as dangerous. In 1990s Delhi, books by Hayek and Shenoy were hidden in shops “as if they were pornography,” as Sanjeev Sanyal has recalled. Socialist political masters and the Keynesian-Marxist academic class preferred suppression and caricature to open debate. Confronting them meant admitting that decades of planning had wasted opportunities while freer economies elsewhere delivered growth. The fear was never of losing an argument. It was of losing the power to direct other people’s lives. Shenoy and Hayek needed no state endorsement. Their record of accurate prediction remains their strongest tribute.

I had the misfortune of operating this earlier this year by far the most broken, useless, shitass portal to ever exist

THEY FOUND A LOOPHOLE. In Madhya Pradesh, the GeM portal was meant to choke the old habit of departmental shopping. Instead, it has become another file that Bhopal’s babus know how to fold. A senior officer in the state secretariat simply slices a multi-crore requirement into sub-threshold pieces, has the same three “empanelled” suppliers upload matching quotes within minutes, and records the transaction as an “urgent departmental necessity.” The goods arrive late and overpriced; the payment is released before the first complaint can be registered. When auditors later notice the pattern, the file is closed with the familiar phrase “procedure followed.” Public money moves from the treasury to a handful of known contractors while the portal’s transparency dashboard continues to glow green. In Madhya Pradesh, the system is not broken. It is used exactly as its operators intend.

₹11,800 for one 60W LED light. ₹33,500 for a litre of phenyl. That’s what some Madhya Pradesh urban local bodies paid on the GeM portal, while the same items were bought for ₹306 and ₹5 elsewhere 374 civic bodies spent ~₹1,134 crore over three years. Analysis showed ~₹250 crore could have been saved at average rates. ACS Sanjay Dubey has already warned officials and a probe is on. This isn’t a “purchase gap.” It’s public money being treated like monopoly money. When a bottle of disinfectant costs more than a fridge and a street light costs more than a decent phone, the only question left is: how many more “gaps” are still hidden? Share this if you’re done watching taxpayer money vanish in plain sight.

A student cleaned a polluted river with his own money and basic tools. Civic bodies in the same state recorded phenyl at ₹33,500 a litre and LED lights at ₹11,800. Surendra Singh Chaudhary (Bittu Tabahi), a 21-year-old from Biaora, spent months clearing the Ajnar River largely alone, using roughly ₹30,000 of his savings and minimal gear. His work went viral and drew a job offer from The Ocean Cleanup’s founder. A review of purchases by 374 urban local bodies (₹1,134 crore over three years) flagged the opposite: phenyl from ₹5 to ₹33,500 a litre, 60-watt LEDs from ₹306 to ₹11,800, and garbage vehicles from ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh. Do Government bodies need radical decentralization overhaul? What do you think?

Odisha’s power distribution transformation. Tata Power took over Odisha’s 4 DISCOMs in phases during 2020–21, partnering with the state govt. Official OERC data (FY22–FY25): • Western Odisha: SAIFI 600 → 377; SAIDI 424 → 308 hours • Northern Odisha: SAIFI 680 → 526; SAIDI 456 → 324 hours SAIFI = frequency of power cuts. SAIDI = total duration of outages per consumer. Lower is better. IIT Bhubaneswar’s 2026 study reported ~50% improvement in SAIDI in Central Odisha over its 5-year review period. Tariffs: OERC raised tariffs by ~5.6% in FY22, reduced domestic energy charges by ₹0.10/unit in FY25, and kept tariffs unchanged in FY23, FY24, FY25 and FY26. FY27 tariffs are also in force from April 2026. OERC sets tariffs, not Tata Power. Reliability has improved significantly in several regions, though results vary across Odisha. cc @LPI4India @jshilanjanm @Hryindex

Areas of Gurgaon enjoying Tata Power didn't have to face any Bijli Babu thuggery. Industries in those areas gained a 3 whole business day advantage over the rest of the state.

Haryana has a serious power deficit issue and yet this is the state of things. It'll continue importing power from other states.
Panchkula: Haryana electricity employees have called off their strike following talks with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Power Minister Anil Vij. The Joint Action Committee said electricity supply would be restored immediately. The employees said the Chief Minister had assured them that private players would not be allowed to enter the state’s power sector and that parallel power distribution licences would be revoked. The next meeting is scheduled for November 3 to discuss pending issues.

The electricity board strike left an 11-year-old on a BiPAP machine without power for 24 hours in Ambala’s Dhankaur village. His inverter died. His father searched in vain for a generator and was reduced to begging at the SE’s office. The boy has needed the machine since August and is under treatment at PGI. This is not a labour dispute. It is reckless endangerment. When monopoly utility workers cut power knowing households contain children whose breathing depends on continuous electricity, they treat a child’s survival as acceptable collateral. Strikers who impose that risk are not exercising rights they are committing criminal negligence. A child’s lungs do not pause for negotiations.
