Criminals can install card skimmers in seconds, allowing them to drain benefits cards before victims realize anything is wrong. For families and individuals who rely on those funds, the loss can be devastating. Last week, our agents inspected card readers at retailers across Los Angeles communities and seized 16 skimming devices, helping keep an estimated $16.6 million out of criminals’ hands. 🎥 @CBSNews was there to cover this incredible operation. The Secret Service is cracking down on card skimmers and gave CBS News exclusive access to a three-day operation in Los Angeles. Carter Evans joined investigators as they visited hundreds of retailers and checked for evidence of these skimmers, which are secretively placed on card readers and can help scammers net up to $1 million per device. This morning, BPD’s Elder Fraud Unit - Detective Jim Curulla and Detective Deana McNeal - had the opportunity to appear on @mysuncoast @mysuncoastview and share five things that are common in nearly every scam - aka the 5 p’s of fraud: 🚩 Pretend: Scammers pose as a trusted person or organization (law enforcement, government agency, utility company, bank, etc.) 🚩🚩 Problem or Prize: They claim a fake crisis exists, such as an arrest warrant, missed jury duty, or a hacked bank account. Or, they might claim you won a lottery or sweepstakes but need to cover fees or taxes to collect it. 🚩 Pressure: They rush you to act immediately and tell you not to hang up or verify the story. 🚩 Pay: They demand untraceable payment methods like gift cards, cryptocurrency, or even gold bars. You can learn more about the 5 p’s, common scams, and what to do if you’re a victim by downloading our Elder Fraud booklet on our website. Or, stop by BPD - we still have some printed booklets available in our lobby! 🔗 bradentonpd.com

AI-powered Flock Safety cameras are facing growing scrutiny over privacy concerns despite being used by law enforcement to recover stolen vehicles and solve crimes. The cameras capture license plates and other identifying vehicle features, storing the information in databases accessible to police agencies. Critics argue the technology creates a warrantless mass surveillance network, prompting some Connecticut towns to remove the systems. | @HARRISFAULKNER @FaulknerFocus @foymeetsworld

This isn't the kind of customer loyalty program Mattison's had in mind. BPD is attempting to identify the young man in this video from Mattison's City Grille - Riverwalk. On Sunday, July 12, at 10:27 p.m., he slashed a screen at the restaurant. About 30 minutes later, he came back and used the business's hose to spray water into the restaurant. If you recognize him, we'd appreciate your help identifying him before he finds another creative way to spend a Sunday night. Please email Officer Olivas at [email protected].

🔒 YOUR 🚘! Home security cameras are great, but they won't prevent criminals from checking door handles or targeting unlocked vehicles. This video is from June 11, in the 700 block of 46th St E. The crooks checked several cars and found that at least two were unlocked. The burglars made off with a "Furrion S" backup camera system and a "Venty" camping fan. These are crimes of opportunity. Please lock your vehicles, and never leave firearms or valuables inside. If you recognize the suspects (we get it - you can't see their faces, but perhaps the clothing looks familiar) or have information about the burglaries, contact Detective Gates at [email protected] or 941-875-2866.

⛪ FUNERAL HOME SCAM ALERT 🚨 This egregious scam is being reported again in our area. Scammers gather information about a deceased loved one from obituaries. They pretend to be from the funeral home selected by grieving family members and tell victims they must pay more money immediately, or the funeral will be canceled. They use a technique called "spoofing" to alter the caller ID, making calls appear to come from the funeral home. If you receive one of these calls: - HANG UP. Immediately contact the funeral home directly using a verified phone number - not the one provided in the scammer’s call, text, or email. - DO NOT provide ANY form of payment. - Contact BPD and report the crime: 941-932-9300.
