On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to break from Britain. They approved the Lee Resolution declaring the colonies free and independent states. John Adams was so sure of the moment he predicted July 2 would be celebrated with parades and fireworks for generations to come. The document we throw barbecues over showed up two days later. Forget the date. What counts is what that vote said: government only holds power because the people let it, and the people can take it back when it quits serving them. That idea didn't die in 1776. Every Texan who wants Austin and Washington answering to us instead of the reverse is heir to that vote. Consent is still the whole ballgame.

The Declaration of Independence expressed that natural rights make individuals sovereign over the state, and that all free people can alter or abolish their government at will. While the regime rejects these concepts, we view them both as America’s cornerstone principles.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence stood in the face of tyranny and rejected it, seceding from the most powerful country in the world at the time. They were laughed at, ridiculed, and branded traitors. But they also changed the world.

The Declaration of Independence was a declaration of secession. The ruling class has a vested interest in hiding this fact, and does whatever it can to persuade you otherwise. July 4th isn’t about national allegiance; it’s about national divorce.

The Libertarian Party is deeply saddened to share that longtime activist, candidate, and former national staff member David Aitken passed away on May 28 at the age of 79. David was a foundational pillar of the liberty movement in Colorado for four decades. A U.S. Army veteran (1967–1971) and retired business software developer, he dedicated his life to advancing individual freedom. Whenever the movement needed a standard-bearer, David answered the call—serving as Colorado LP Chair, defending petition rights in court, and running for numerous offices including Governor (1990), Secretary of State (2002), and State Senate (2024). Inspired by the economics of Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowell, David’s core mission was to reduce government regulation so everyone could freely pursue their dreams. When he wasn’t fighting for freedom, he could be found enjoying his retirement on Capitol Hill or skiing at Copper Mountain. We are profoundly grateful for David’s lifetime of tireless service. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the many liberty lovers whose lives he touched. Rest in peace, David.

1: I'm sorry. It's my responsibility to somehow stop these things but I suck at it. 2: It is wrong to start a war. They have already hit civilian targets, killed children. 3: The president starting a war without a declaration by the Congress is criminal. 4: Iran was not threatening the United States in any way. 5: Israel is not a state in the Union, nor even a treaty ally, nor even a faithful friend. 6: No one in power believes their own lies that Iran was making nukes or was about to start to try or anything of the sort. It's a completely fake pretext for war. Their program was nearly "obliterated" last June and they offered in recent days to refrain from enrichment for 3-5 years and then to limit it's purity to only 1.5% u-235, completely and totally nullifying that pretext. Perhaps that's why Trump attacked now, to prevent Witkoff from actually accomplishing something acceptable. 7: Iran does not have and is not anywhere near having missiles that can reach the U.S. 8: The fact that the president has to invoke the Beirut bombing of 1983 as a pretext just goes to show that he has nothing like a case for defensive or "pre-emptive" war of any kind. It's simple aggression. 9: They have no plan for who to install in power there. The monarchists and MEK cultists are a complete joke. Kurdish commies are no better. 10: They and the bin Ladenites in AQ and ISIS are certainly thrilled at their new opportunity to slaughter their enemies though. Enough bombs could destroy the state, but not replace it. A permanent Syria-style civil war would be just fine with Tel Aviv and therefore Washington. 11: Iran has already hit a US base in Bahrain and launched attacks at others across the region. 12: If the Ayatollahs Khamenei or Sistani announce a new religious obligation on the part of their followers to attack the West, they will have an army far greater than bin Laden or Baghdadi could have dreamed of. Most of our recent wars have benefited them, so they haven't had the need to. Now, who knows what might happen, but it is certainly not worth the risk. 13: Israel also played this sort of crucial role in America's invasion of Iraq 23 years ago, but way under the radar compared to now. Resent it. 14: Here's me refuting lies about Iran's nuclear program 16 years ago. For all the good it's ever done.

Today in 1945, the US government dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Combined with the detonation of another atomic bomb three days later in Nagasaki, Japan, the decision resulted in the death of 225,000 people—most of which were innocent civilians. It's a sad reminder that most of what we have been taught about the atomic bombs, and the reasons behind their usage, is the product of lies and the US propaganda machine. According to the standard narrative, Japan refused to surrender in WW2 even after long and bloody battles in the Pacific, and an allied invasion of the Japanese mainland would have caused the deaths of 1 million+ allied soldiers as well as 10 million+ Japanese. Slaughtering hundreds of thousands of innocents in the two cities, by this argument, saved millions of lives and convinced Japan to surrender. In reality, Japan had made overtures as early as late May, 1945 to surrender to the United States in a virtually unconditional manner, save for some basic legal protections for Emperor Hirohito. Furthermore, Japan was in no position to continue the war for long, for the US oil embargo had completely starved the country of fuel and basic resources. By the end of July, 1945, Japan’s navy had completely stopped major naval operations. Some of the highest-ranking and most respected US generals reflected on the bombings and expressed moral outrage and strategic doubts about their usage. Others made this clear at the time, and strongly urged their civil superiors not to use them. Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Dwight Eisenhower, for instance, pleaded with Secretary of War Henry Stimson to reconsider the plan, expressing his belief “that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary,” and also because he “thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives. It was my belief that Japan was,” Eisenhower wrote, “at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of ‘face.’” Admiral William Leahy, the highest-ranking US military officer on active duty in the war, wrote similarly: “It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons.” Chester Nimitz, the commander-in-chief of the US Pacific Fleet, insisted that the atomic bombs were “of no material assistance in our war against Japan” for similar reasons. General Douglas MacArthur, the supreme allied commander of the Southwest Pacific, saw “no military justification for the dropping of the bomb” whatsoever, and also professed that “Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped.” Admiral William “Bull” Halsey stated emphatically that “atomic bombing—of civilians, is morally indefensible.” Because the US government decided otherwise, 225,000+ innocent civilians died in atrocities the scale of which the world had never seen. Instead of saving American lives, the chief purpose of the two atomic bombs seems to have been to flex the might of the American war machine in front of Soviet eyes. The detonations led to a costly arms race, the birth of the military industrial complex, and the Cold War itself. Americans are still paying the price for all of it. I do not accept that the atomic bombs saved millions of lives (they didn’t), that Japan would never have surrendered otherwise (they would have, and tried to do so before the bombings), or that they were morally justified in any way (they weren’t). These are all myths to justify the mass extermination of civilians in an overt act of terrorism by the US government. The catastrophes in Hiroshima and Nagasaki demonstrate that it is never moral to target civilians for mass death. I sincerely hope the horrors of that day can still persuade some that atrocities of this kind must never transpire again. For humanity to thrive, there can be no brinksmanship with Russia, China, or any other nuclear power. For humanity to thrive, there can be no nuclear winter. For humanity to thrive, there can never be any more tragedies like Hiroshima and Nagasaki ever again.
