So women wont be able to stay on a main well lit road like Oxford street to hail a cab after. night out? They will be forced into side roads to get to another main road? Or have to walk a kilometer? What about disabled or people with kids or shopping? No jumping on a bus or getting a cab. All the traffic has to go somewhere and surrounding area will be gridlocked. Who does this benefit? There will be more crime and rough sleeping now. Just watch.

Cyclists are continuing to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, despite being asked to dismount. Around seven security staff have been stationed near Oxford Circus, calling out to cyclists to get off their bikes, with mixed success. BRITAIN AND FRANCE — some thoughts. British and French politics are now moving in different directions. Macron destroyed the French centre-left/right parties in the 2017 presidential election. They have never recovered. But Macron’s centrist movement hasn’t filled the vacuum. Nor, even as his failures multiplied over almost a decade, was there a renaissance of the centre left/left but the rise of more extremes — MĆ©lenchon’s LFI on the Left, Le Pen’s RN on the Right. Latest polls indicate they will juke it out in the presidential 2nd round next May — with Le Pen the easy winner. In Britain the rise of Reform on the Right and the Greens on the Left since the 2024 election + the collapse of Labour/Tories in the polls suggested, if not a Left/Right polarisation like France, then a new politics of multi-party democracy. But 2026 brought a major correction — it’s been a dire year for Reform and the Greens, whereas Labour/Tories (but especially Labour under Burnham) have enjoyed something of a renaissance from their polling nadirs. So, as French politics increasingly becomes a choice between populist Left and Right, the mainstream centre left/right has become once again the story in British politics. With the most recent polls showing Labour in the lead, the Tories second, Reform third (and still slipping), Greens nowhere (along with LDs). At the moment Labour must be favourite to win an election (at least end up the largest party). Of course Labour/Tories are still a long way off their former dominance in share of the vote. But they are, at least for now, on the way back, which is more than can be said for their French counterparts.

This is absolutely incomprehensible to us in France. Knowledge, purpose-built vehicule, vehicule built in šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§, charities... A Trade like this in šŸ‡²šŸ‡« would be mentioned in the French Constitution, and its Rights & Status guaranted by it šŸš–šŸ§¾āœ‹ – at Paris, France

Lambeth Council's own report has found the West Dulwich LTN resulted in ā€œno significant traffic reductionā€ but increased congestion on boundary roads. The courts found that the Council had acted illegally when installing it & ordered its removal. telegraph.co.uk/gift/fe78242…

Astounding Sunday Times investigation reveals new scandal in SNP’s Socialist Scotland: 800 NHS, central government, council and quango workers whose jobs no longer exist but remain on the public payroll because of the SNP’s ā€˜no public-sector redundancy’ policy. Estimated cost of paying people to do nothing: Ā£27m a year. One NHS Highland worker has been receiving a full salary and benefits for 17 years despite not having a specific job. The health board refused to say what the worker had been doing for almost two decades and how much they had been paid. Likely cost to the taxpayer is expected to be far higher with several public bodies refusing to disclose salaries for hundreds of the workers awaiting redeployment.

We have a zero emission zero waste business in Soho and have worked 30 years in climate change, green energy and sustainability, the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street will deny occasional shoppers cabs, busses and bikes, while burying residents in traffic. It’s a bad idea.

More like the beginning of it's decline. pushing traffic onto surrounding roads, this risks worsening congestion & diverting shoppers away from neighbouring streets, putting retailers at further risk of losing business or closing altogether. Congrats in short-sighted planning.
A new era for the nation’s high street starts in two days. Nearly a kilometre of Oxford Street will become traffic-free, creating more space for people and marking the beginning of its biggest transformation in a generation.

The cast-iron lamppost near Albert Bridge features two climbing boys—one passing a burning torch to the other—wrapped around a shaft decorated with oak leaves, acorns, and overflowing cornucopias. It was sculpted by Timothy Butler in 1874. When the London Metropolitan Board of Works was choosing lighting for the new Thames Embankments, Butler's design was rejected for mass production because it was deemed too complex and expensive to replicate. The city chose the famous "Dolphin" (sturgeon) lamps instead, leaving only two of Butler's rare climbing boy lamps in existence—both on Chelsea Embankment (the other sits further west near Chelsea Old Church). The granite plinth features writing on its east face that marks the official opening of the Chelsea Embankment in May 1874. It credits the foundry, Coalbrookdale, and honors the key players behind London's revolutionary Victorian sewage system: Sir James Macnaghten Hogg (Chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Works) and Sir Joseph Bazalgette (the chief civil engineer).

This is beyond parody. Residents in Rotherham are bravely fighting the construction of a …Primary School Assembly Hall.Ā  Their worry?Ā  It would host school plays, community classes, and could mean more congestion. Now the application has to go before a planning committee.Ā  Whether your child’s Nativity play goes ahead is now at mercy of the local council. If building a SCHOOL HALL needs a fight, imagine trying to build anything else. We have the RADICAL OPINION that we should say yes to a school hall. What do you think?
