UPZONING ALONE WON'T FIX THE HOUSING CRISIS; WE NEED TO HAVE A LAND VALUE TAX BECAUSE UPZONING GENERATES WINDFALL GAINS FOR LAND BANKERS. LVT WILL CAPTURE THIS VALUE FOR EVERYONE'S BENEFIT, ENSURES THAT UPZONING BOOSTS SUPPLY, AND INCENTIVIZES EFFICIENT MUNICIPAL GOVERNANCE.

High ticket prices function effectively as a land value tax for concerts. And people can't shut up about it.

Meanwhile, one of the most harmful policy movements in America right now is a property tax revolt that is shifting us away from our most economically efficient tax, all so property owners can have a little more in their pockets next month.

"The Electoral College makes it so California and New York don't decide elections" is just one step removed from "California and New York residents should not get to vote" because it fundamentally rejects the idea that certain voters get as much right to win as others.
Anyone who would call themselves "left-YIMBYs" are fully supportive of a land value tax, which is a complete socialization of land rent, so no, left-YIMBYs are not housing Reaganites.
Also, social housing does nothing to advance the sharing of land rents unless rents are set at market rates, which left-NIMBYs are vehemently against as a matter of principle, so I assume most of it benefits a random subset of the population at the expense of broader society.

Sure but also social housing's track record doesn't move me. Even in places where it works there seems to be insane wait time that could take many years. Having more private development seems to be the best way to build at scale. Alongside giving housing vouchers to those who can't afford a home.
"Turning a city into Manhattan is evil" says *checks notes* a resident of New York City.

Ballpark estimates for Vancouver over 30 years:
- provincial income tax: $50B
- 100% land value tax: $130B
We could stop taxing income, start taxing location rents (instead of giving them to homeowners as a windfall gain), and still have $80B left over.

I have a lot of nuanced opinions about housing/urbanism coalitions but one thing I am not nuanced about is that Georgists and YIMBYS are an absolutely necessary power couple.
Every substantive objection to YIMBY policy has is elegantly addressed by georgism.
One of my more satisfying wins in a forum debate was getting an annoying ancap to admit that anarchism is a moral, not a political, philosophy because it cannot actually stop coercion as it is part of the market, i.e. warlords/mobs cannot be abolished by "implenting" anarchism.

THIS. A nation is a land trust and Georgists ask you to become trustees instead of permanent rentoids
Yes, "society" is the landlord, but here's the good news: everyone is part of society, so that makes everyone their own lords of land. "Society" isn't "your" landlord, YOU are your landlord!

Yep. LVT is especially good for cities dealing with a history of population loss and land banking (like Kansas City).
