Following the Prime Minister's announcement of a national commission on electoral reform, the UK's voting system is once again under scrutiny.
NatCen's British Social Attitudes data shows support for electoral reform remains higher than at any point before 2021. Support peaked at 60% in 2024, in the immediate aftermath of the most disproportionate election result in modern British history, before easing to 53% in 2025.
While opinion has cooled slightly over the last year, a majority of the public still favour changing the voting system, compared with 40% who support retaining First Past the Post.
As the debate continues, the data offers an important benchmark for understanding how public attitudes towards electoral reform are evolving.

Brilliant to see the Prime Minister announcing a National Commission on Electoral Reform!
Too many voters feel like politics does not speak for them.
Fully behind the PM on this as a strong supporter of Proportional Representation. Westminster needs fair elections.
“Today I am announcing a new National Commission on Electoral Reform. I invite all the political parties to be part of its work. We will contest the next election with a manifesto commitment to change the electoral system”

PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote has given her response to PM Andy Burnham's plans for a new national commission on electoral reform #Labour2026

ALT The graphic comprises a photograph of PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote alongside the text: Electoral reform "PCS has long supported electoral reform, it has been national policy for a number of years, so hearing the PM today confirm that he will establish a national commission is a positive step, our democracy needs to be reflective of our voting intentions, PR will ensure that is the case."

A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system.
Today I set out a different path for Britain.
You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics.
Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love.
If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other.
It's time to draw a line.
To move beyond a decade of drift and division.
To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country.
To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode.
To hope again.
I have long campaigned for this day
I want to thank all who campaigned for this. All the MPs who signed the amendment
We always said the PM could just announce it
Mandela said ‘It seems impossible until its done’
Rarely is a political moment so clear cut and so consequential

Neil Kinnock: First past the post is no longer fit for purpose. Burnham must lead the way bit.ly/4zNdJ2b

Analysis shows that proportional representation produces more stable and trusted governments than those produced by FPTP
At the same time, more and more people are being shut out from the UK's increasingly unfair and disproportionate electoral system
The time has come for electoral reform, writes Labour MP @RNBlake

"For perhaps the first time in postwar history, all the conditions for [electoral] reform are now in place." 💯
✅ Majority public support
✅ Increasingly chaotic elections
✅ Growing support in Westminster
✅ A pro-PR Prime Minister
This could be the moment that changes UK politics for good.

Under First Past the Post, some seats are seen as "battlegrounds" and others as ones that can be safely ignored.
To really "put power in every postcode", Andy Burnham needs to address this fundamental injustice.

Andy Burnham supports electoral reform, but how does this fit his broader agenda? Clues may lie in 'Head North', his 2024 book with Steve Rotherham. Politics for the Many’s Vice-Chair John Doolan reviews it for us. #TimeForPR politicsforthemany.co.uk/wha…
