How can Labour revive the lido? 🏊 In the 1930s, the Labour-led lido programme showed that municipal socialism could create popular infrastructure and political credibility. After a sweltering week, it’s time to renew that legacy. In The People’s Pools, @GR1900 sets out how to fund and deliver new and restored lidos.

With Hector McNeil House gone and Hector McNeil swimming pool pulled down, we now have no civic spaces commemorating Hector McNeil. McNeil is best remembered for brining IBM to Greenock, I’m trying to get cairn built commemorating him overlooking IBM & Gareloch where he came from

Thats a wonderful piece...you are spot on...and the central role of #lido in #passporttopimlico reflected extent to which Herbert Morrison's 1930s "city of lidos" vision, which he took into 1945 govt, channelled popular enthusiasm for what practical municipal socialism could be

Hector McNeil was hugely admired - Attlee's Sec of State for Scotland aged barely 40, then died shockingly young, barely 45. Dick Mabon who succeeded McNeil at the by-election on his death in 1955 told me that had McNeil lived that he was likely Labour leader & future PM

another wee link between Inverclyde and Morrison, he endorsed McNeil in this local election leaflet which I actually found in the Gourock council house I live in, built in 1950, the house (and leaflet) belonged to my grandfather. We no longer believe we can achieve such greatness

Roy Hattersley. Labour giant, & friend to the Labour History Group. His contribution to our panel alongside fellow Callaghan Cabinet member Bill Rodgers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Hugh Gaitskell was really special. He will be missed. But never forgotten.

Sad news. I’ll always remember our many chats on Harold Wilson & Labour history. Insightful, driven by a burning sense of injustice and always kind, Roy was a remarkable politician and writer who served the Labour Party and the country with distinction. theguardian.com/politics/202…

I’m thinking of the late Roy Hattersley and his family today. He was always such interesting, engaging company. Speaking to him together with Neil Kinnock, to whom he was such a loyal and effective Deputy Leader, was an evening to remember.

Roy Hattersley reflects on the poverty in Sheffield in the 1950s that shaped his socialism - after spending the Summer as a milkman’s mate. “It was my first confrontation with the idea of the underserving poor. I rejected it then and I reject it now”.

Clearing out my grandparents flat this weekend and coming across these treasures - thank you cards from Denis Healey and Leeds MP Joe Dean - my grandfather made their suits. He was so proud of that.

🚨 Baroness Hayter begins the @LabourHistory event on Jim Callaghan's premiership.
🚨 Very pleased to be able to attend the @LabourHistory event on James Callaghan's premiership. 🏅 With the reminder - did we mention it? - that no former Prime Minister in British history has (to date) intervened in Parliament as an ex-PM more than 'Sunny Jim'.
