๐บ๐ธ News from the US โ AFTER 83 YEARS, AN AMERICAN AIRMAN IS FINALLY COMING HOME.
Six siblings served. Five came home.
For Charles Ray Smith, the journey home would take 83 years.
He was a kid from Henderson County, North Carolina, who enlisted in 1942. A year later, he was serving his country as a tail gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator, thousands of miles from home.
On August 16, 1943, Staff Sgt. Smith took off from Libya with the 67th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group. Their targets were enemy airfields at Foggia, Italy.
Twenty-six bombers went out. Seven never returned. His was one of them.
Back in North Carolina, a family that had sent six of its children into military service would welcome only five home.
Charles remained missing.
In 1945, American personnel recovered unidentified airmenโs remains from a cemetery in Lacedonia, Italy. Unable to establish their identities, they buried them as unknowns in an American military cemetery in Naples.
Among those remains were Charlesโs.
Decades passed. His relatives provided DNA samples, hoping that one day there would be an answer.
In June 2022, the unidentified remains were exhumed for examination. On May 29, 2026, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency finally identified him.
His return to North Carolina was scheduled for this weekend, with burial announced for Sunday, October 25, at Shepard Memorial Park in Hendersonville, with full military honors.
Eighty-three years after his final mission, another generation of his family would finally have the chance to bring him home.
There is something deeply moving about a country still searching for its fallen long after the guns have fallen silent. About investigators, historians, scientists, veterans, and families working to recover a man whose war ended before many of them were born.
Because he was never just a name on a list. He was someoneโs son. Someoneโs brother. An American airman who served his country and never got to grow old.
Eighty-three years cannot give him back the life he lost. But they have not erased his name.
Welcome home, Staff Sgt. Charles Ray Smith. ๐บ๐ธ

๐ณ๐ด๐บ๐ฆ A Norwegian MP illegally smuggled drones with thermal imaging cameras into Ukraine โ and the government lifted the ban.
The MP appealed to the government, emphasizing that delay could cost the lives of Ukrainian soldiers, but was refused, so the drones were secretly exported, bypassing the rules.
The next day, the government announced that it would expedite the lifting of the ban. Norwegians will be able to legally send civilian drones to Ukraine.

The fucking Republicans think they own every damn election in the world, & cry foul when their cheating & suppression doesn't work.
My feed is full of people from Brazil ecstatic that Lula won, & Republicans calling for Lula to be Maduro'd & Trump to ignore the election results.

Private Percy Tolliday of the 11th Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment, has been laid to rest on the Somme alongside two unknown comrades, more than a century after their deaths in the First World War.
The men were recovered by our colleagues from our specialist Recovery Unit.
Dr Daniel Seaton, CWGC Commemorations Case Officer said: โThe three casualties now laid to rest were recovered by our specialist Recovery Unit, not far away from where todayโs ceremony has taken place. I am delighted that, following research conducted by ourselves and the JCCC, Private Tolliday has been identified, and remain hopeful that it may also be possible to identify the two Unknown Soldiers in the future. All three are now remembered with honour in the Commissionโs Warlencourt British Cemeteryโ

Willy Field, now sadly no longer with us, was released from Dachau in April 1939 and reached Britain on an agricultural permit.
Interned and shipped to Australia aboard the HMT Dunera, he later returned, joined the British Army and landed on D-Day with the 8th Kingโs Royal Irish Hussars.
I have written his story in 'From Dachau to D-Day': amzn.to/3vXbRrM

"My uncle invented radar, can you believe it?"
No Donald, I can't, because he didn't. However, your uncle was a clever man. You just got the surname - and a chronically inflated ego, along with verbal diarrhoea.
