Clean Energy Milestone: Kudankulam Unit-3 Moves Closer to Commissioning
A significant stride in India’s journey towards energy security and sustainability!
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has achieved a major commissioning milestone at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Unit-3 with the successful commencement of “Spillage to Open Reactor” on 25 April 2026.
This critical activity ensures flushing and conditioning of safety systems and main coolant pipelines using light water, establishing the required cleanliness for advanced commissioning stages. It marks the start of individual functional testing of primary system equipment, a decisive step towards bringing Unit-3 closer to operation.
The milestone was inaugurated by Mr. B. C. Pathak, CMD, NPCIL in the presence of Mr. Mikhail Novikov, Director for Projects in India, ASE (Atomstroyexport), Rosatom, highlighting strong Indo-Russian cooperation.
Located in Tirunelveli, Kudankulam continues to power India’s clean energy ambitions. Units 1 & 2 have already generated over 121 Billion Units of clean electricity, averting nearly 104 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions into the environment.
With Units 3 to 6 progressing steadily, Kudankulam site would reach 6000 MW of clean energy installed capacity making it a cornerstone of India’s clean energy future.
NPCIL remains committed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental stewardship, powering a cleaner, stronger, self-reliant India.

The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality.
This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme.
