PUTTING LIPSTICK ON A PIG: THE MYTH OF ZIMBABWE'S INFLATED GDP
On the 21st of October 2026, Zim woke up to a blaring headline in The Herald: Zim is now Africa s 14th largest economy, with a projected GDP of US$65.92 billion.
Sadly, there were no celebrations.
Through the the wizardly of 4 rebasement exercises between 2018 & 2026 Zim has miraculously grown its economy from US$18 b to US$ 65 b .
The miracle starts in Oct 2018 when Zim rebased to 2012, immediately increasing nominal GDP by 40%, from US$18 billion to US$25.8 billion.
In July 2025, the regime egregiously rebased to US$44.4 billion from US$35.2 billion. Later, to US$59.7 billion.
Rebasing is scientific and necessary when structure changes. But Zim rebasing is a fraudulent political ritual done outside science and data.
A harmful, self-serving ego trip to justify the myth that we are on course to upper-middle-income by 2030.
This is why in July 2025 they claimed GNI per capita rose from US$2,893 to US$3,000. In the mid-term review on 30 July 2026, the Minister claimed since NDS1, GNI per capita grew 84%, from US$1,737 to US$3,203.
It is sorcery to expand an economy by 84% through desk stop and ChatGtp without tangible growth on the ground.
The narrative of deception is reinforced by growth of 8.3% in 2025 and 5% in 2026.
But Zimbabwe is going through a bubble driven by fantastic gold and lithium prices. The commodity anchored growth has seen massive micro growth in export earnings
But like all bubbles it has also seen massive leakages arbitrage and rent behavior,
Sadly no concrete measures , such as investment in a Sovereign Wealth Fund have been taken to harvest the bubble .
But September 2026 World Bank Growth and Jobs Report shows growth is structurally shallow. Predominantly consumption-led, narrow sectoral base, total factor productivity declining, manufacturing share eroding.
It has failed to deliver transformation.
Four out five jobs in Zimbabwe are in the informal economy. 60 % of our people live below the international poverty line of US$ 3 a day , surviving on “tsaona “
This is why to ordinary Zimbabweans, 14th largest remains a hollow myth.
Government data itself contradicts US$65bn.
Revenue is US$6.2bn. That means revenue collections are suddenly 9.5% of GDP. Yet we remain most taxed in SADC — corporate tax, PAYE, VAT, IMTT.
For long, tax to GDP was 30%, 10 points above SADC average of 20%. US$6.2bn fits GDP of US$32-36bn. That is IMF's figure before 2018.
Our power consumption too is reflective.
Zimbabwe consumes 6.5 billion units of electricity per year. That is an average of 742 megawatts running 24 hours a day.
A US$65 billion economy needs at 5000 to 8000 MW in installed capacity .
Zim has installed capacity of 1900 MW with Kariba on 1,050MW but producing 250MW — Hwange on 920MW but averaging 400MW despite the fact that Hwange 7 & 8 are new plant.
The regime can’t expect anyone to believe that it has trebled the the size of the economy on the electricity output of 2014.
This is voodoo economics .
Undiluted witchcraft.
Reserves also betray the regime . Zim has two months import cover represented by US$ 2 b according to the RBZ . Compare this with Kenya , US$8 b (US$115 b GDP) Ghana US$9 b( US$75 b GDP)
Zim s reserves are those of a US$32 b economy dressed in oversized US$ 65 b underwear .
Zim s import bill of US$8.5 b bursts the myth . Imports are 25 % of GDP.(Ghana& Kenya are US$20 b ). Zim s imports are reflective of a US$32 b economy.
But two thirds of these imports are food fuel & trinkets not capital goods .
But it is the state of Zim s infrastructure more than anything else that betrays that it is a small battered Republic .
It now takes 12 hours for a truck to drive from Harare to Chirundu & Bulawayo Vic Falls road now exists in memory only .
Never mind the state of rural roads, schools clinics & hospitals.
They are desperate to put lip stick on a pig .
It won’t work . It can’t work .

Kuda Tagwireyi has become the most dangerous man in Zimbabwe.
Having brazenly acquired billions of dollars though crass and gross pillaging of public assets and resources he has set his eyes on the highest political office in the land .
His hubris arrogance and ego thinks that he can commodify political power in Zimbabwe on the same matrix he has sat in his soiled boardroom plotting tenders ,schemes or scams.
He will learn soon learn that buying off ZANU PF is not the same as getting into bed with Trafigura and acquiring rights over the Beira pipe line .
That dealing with war vets is not the same as scamming off the National Social Security Authority ( NASSA) to acquire its shares in First Mutual Life.
He will learn soon that the occupancy of 1 Chancelleor Lane Borrowdale can not be done with the ease he acquired USD 1.9 billion Treasury Bill for his 35 % equity in Kuvimba Mining .
This criminal element can not get away with paying millions to divert public sentiment against CAB 3 .
He can not be allowed to continue doling out millions of dollars to buy his way into public spaces .
GD sixes can never be the bridge to State House .
Those backing him , those who have fast trekked his elevation into the ZANU Central Committee, the Senate , Cabinet and the ZANU politburo must know that Zimbabwe is a not a private limited company .
Neither them , their ancestors or mistresses have title deeds to Zimbabwe.
They have no right to play poker with Zimbabwe institutions and public offices .
They have no right to push Zimbabwe to the brink .
Our advise to Mr Tagwireyi is simple :
Go back home and play with your children .
This path you have chosen only has one guaranteed unhappy ending .

Drivers are urged to proceed via Chinhoyi-Chegutu road and those proceeding to Harare will then use the Robert Mugabe Highway linking with Harare-Bulawayo road at Norton. The same applies to those using the road from Harare to Chinhoyi. The inconvenience has been necessitated to facilitate smooth flow of traffic during the ongoing ZANU PF Conference at Chinhoyi University of Technology. We appeal to drivers to cooperate with the Police and adhere to all road rules and regulations.

I was particularly excited to have had the opportunity, alongside my friend and fellow Cde from Botswana, Faith Gunda, to represent The Protest Lab Africa Region in facilitating the Movement Marketplace. The initiative provided a platform for movements and activists to connect, share experiences, showcase their organising work, and reflect on the causes they are fighting for, the challenges they face, and, importantly, what continues to give them hope in the midst of difficult and often hostile political environments.
I found this engagement especially meaningful because it created room for activists to recognise one another not simply as individuals working within separate organisations or national boundaries, but as part of a broader ecosystem of resistance, mutual learning, and collective action. It was an opportunity to discover shared struggles, identify possibilities for collaboration, and appreciate the creativity, courage, and determination that sustain human rights work across our continent.
I also had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion on “Resisting Authoritarianism, Electoral Repression & Shrinking Civic Space,” a subject that remains central to the democratic struggles unfolding across Africa. Our discussions underscored the importance of defending the fundamental freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly; protecting human rights defenders; challenging the weaponisation of legal and institutional frameworks against dissenting voices; and safeguarding the civic and political spaces through which citizens participate in shaping their societies.
As civil society actors, our responsibility extends beyond documenting violations or responding to individual incidents of repression. We must also confront the structural conditions that make repression possible, strengthen democratic accountability, defend the right of citizens to organise and dissent, and build movements capable of advancing meaningful and lasting social transformation.
One of the most powerful lessons I took from Maputo is that solidarity must be organised, protection must be collective, and resistance must be sustainable. We cannot afford to build movements that depend solely on the courage of a few individuals while leaving them exposed to repression and isolation. We must invest in collective care, intergenerational movement-building, cross-border cooperation, digital solidarity, and the institutional resilience necessary to ensure that the struggle for justice does not collapse under the weight of repression.
My sincere appreciation and revolutionary gratitude goes to the CIVICUS FoPA Workstream team, for the continued support and for creating opportunities for movement leaders like myself to participate in these important regional engagements. Such opportunities are invaluable not only for individual growth, but also for strengthening the connections, knowledge, and collective capacity that our movements need to advance the struggle for democratic freedoms and social justice.
To every activist, human rights defender, movement organiser, and civil society comrade who continues to resist injustice, often at tremendous personal cost: our struggles are interconnected, our liberation is inseparable, and our solidarity must know no borders.
We must continue to organise, resist, protect one another, and build the democratic alternatives our people deserve. The road to freedom is neither easy nor linear, but history reminds us that no system of repression can permanently extinguish the collective aspirations of an organised people.
In the name of the people-until victory always! #AlutaContinua✊️

As I reported yesterday, the factional battle within ZANUPF pitting President Emmerson Mnangagwa against his deputy, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, a retired general, is intensifying. Today the war of carefully chosen words continued.
President Mnangagwa thanked those who attended the Presidential Fundraising Dinner, held to raise money for the party's 23rd National People's Conference, which is taking place this week in Chinhoyi. As I said yesterday, the Vice President and his faction stayed away.
Senior figures aligned to him, among them retired General Anselem Sanyatwe, were absent.
The President did not hide his displeasure. After thanking those who came, he openly registered his disappointment, pointing out that some members of the Politburo had not attended.
He then switched to Shona and asked the audience, rhetorically, whether they had heard what he had just said. It was a message aimed squarely at bus deputy seated next to him.
Where this battle ends will shape the future of ZANUPF, but not necessarily the future of Zimbabwe. I say this because ZANUPF remains ZANUPF regardless of who leads it. It is a system of governance, not a single man.
We saw this when the late former President Robert Mugabe was removed and President Mnangagwa took over.
The face at the top changed, but the system did not. Whoever wins this fight inherits the same machinery, and ordinary Zimbabweans should not expect their lives to change simply because one faction triumphs over another.

If indeed it is correct that they are constitutional proposals to delink the ZANU President from the National Presidency then surely ZANU must accept that as a liberation movement it is finished and gone .
Bar the 2017 coup the ZANU PF leadership has always been a substantive position occupied by individuals leading and executing the liberation struggle from the front .
Its founding President , the unparalleled Ndabaningi Sithole was a principled cadre who led from the front until years later the Mgagao Declaration of 1975 all but stripped him of leadership .
Chairman Chitepo , was the de facto leader of ZANU from 1968 until his ethnic elimination in March 1975.
He was a brilliant executioner of the struggle reposed with clarity alacrity and purity .
Mugabe for all his aloofness and detachment had some organic connection with the liberation movement that would be evident in the 1980 General Election.
But that ZANU PF is gone .
The battle of the soul of ZANU PF was lost in November 2017 .
ZANU surrendered itself to opportunists and murderers who had presided over some of the darkest periods of our history , none more gruesome than Gukurahundi .
A brigand of ravenous gangsters and hyenas had taken over .
We saw them at their recent dinner where US$ 10 m dollars was raised in hours.
The ZANU of ideology and discipline has been taken over by limousine riding , champagne guzzling fraudsters with Gucci bags and Rolex watches .
The party of Chitepo Tekere Nkomo and Sithole has been taken over by Scott , Tungwarara and Nguwaya
It has been taken by criminal in chief Kuda Tagwireyi.
Cab 3 was about these gangsters .
Removing the right of Zimbabweans to vote for their President and surrendering that to Parliament was a move created for Kuda Tagwireyi and his phalanx of Zvigananda.
Making sure that the National President does not have to be voted by the ZANU base is part of the Zvigananda agenda .
Truth is Kuda Tagwireyi and his gang of syndicates have become the most dangerous individuals in Zimbabwe .
They pose an existential threat to the Republic .
Truth is they must be stopped .
They have a lot to answer to Zimbabwe.
The 2013 Constitution must be restored .
Constitutionalism and the rule of law must be protected
The judiciary must be independent and secure .
The Republic must be safeguarded .

SABHUKU'S EYE: THE ANATOMY OF AN INSTITUTIONAL COUP
Within the architecture of liberation movements turned ruling parties, Constitutions are never mere administrative instruments; they are the scaffolding of power itself.
What appears as a dry exercise in legal alignment can often conceal a far more consequential struggle over who commands the State, and who commands the Party that commands the State.
The draft proposals for the amendment of the ZANU PF Constitution, by the Party's Secretary for Legal Affairs, must be read in this light.
On its face, the document purports to align the Party's supreme law with the Constitution of Zimbabwe Act No. 6 of 2026.
In substance, however, it introduced a doctrinal rupture that strikes at the very heart of ZANU PF's political tradition since 1963: the indivisibility of the Party Presidency and the State Presidency.
For decades, the principle has been axiomatic: the President and First Secretary of ZANU PF is, ipso facto, the Party's sole candidate for national presidential elections. The draft now seeks to sever that umbilical cord.
Legal Skullduggerry
The ZANU-PF Constitution has ALWAYS said the person elected as Party President at Congress automatically becomes the Party's sole candidate for the State Presidential election.
What the draft proposes in 2.1 (a): is that "an elected President may not automatically become the State Presidential Candidate;
(b) If the Party President is not a Candidate for State elections, the Provincial Coordinating Committees sitting as Electoral Colleges shall nominate a State Presidential Candidate endorsed by Central Committee.
That is a constitutional coup.
It separates the two offices and for the first time in ZANU-PF history, you can be President of the Party but NOT President of Zimbabwe. And you can be President of Zimbabwe without being President of the Party.
That creates a centre of power ABOVE the State President. Combined with Section 3.1 (Supremacy of the Party), it says: The Party is the principal authority over Government.
The President, VPs, Ministers, MPs must obey party ideology/resolutions.
(c) "Any of those office-bearers who acts contrary to Party policy is subject to the Party's Disciplinary Procedures."
The explicit translation of that is: A sitting State President can now be disciplined, recalled, or fired by the Party President and Central Committee.
Even more corrosive, as Secretary for Legal Affairs, he tabled this without the knowledge or approval of the First Secretary (President Mnangagwa) and Secretary General Mudenda.
- Secondly it directly contradicts Act No. 6 of 2026 which was meant to align the Party Constitution to extend terms to 2030. The draft does the opposite as it creates a legal mechanism to remove ED as State President while remaining Party President, or to have someone else nominated as State President even if ED is still Party President.
This is treasonous because it gives the Party, controlled by a few PCCs, the power to recall a sitting President elected by Parliament under the new Constitution.
SECTION 7 - The Administration Directorate and Director General
This is another power grab.
Part of it reads "It is proposed to establish an Administration Directorate as part of the principal organs of the Party... operates under the direction of the Secretary General; headed by a Director-General..."
The Problems are immediately clear. The move (a) elevates a bureaucracy to a Principal Organ. As it is, Principal Organs are Politburo, Central Committee, Congress. Now a secretariat of employees also becomes equal to them.
Secondly, it transfers Party power from the President to the Secretary General. Under the current Constitution party administration is under the President who is also the First Secretary.
However, under this proposal
- 7.1(a) - operates under SG
- 7.2(b) - DG chairs recruitment of all staff, except Directors who are recruited by a Committee headed by the SG
- 7.2(a) - DG provides secretariat to ALL Principal Organs - meaning he controls agendas, minutes, records, information flow.
The SG becomes the de facto Executive Prime Minister of the Party, while the President is reduced to a ceremonial figure who only gets a casting vote.
c) It also creates a Deep State.
The DG is not elected at Congress but is an employee appointed by the SG. Yet he will supervise all Department Directors. This is how you build a permanent factional machine that survives Congresses.
Thus the proposed changes in Section 6 gives the President a fake crown, while Section 7 takes away the real power, control of the Party machine and gives it to the Secretary General.
Conclusion
To be fair, every ruling party that makes a major national constitutional amendment must realign its own charter. Act No. 6 of 2026, by introducing a parliamentary mode of electing a State President, necessarily forces ZANU PF to clarify the relationship between its internal electoral processes and the new national process. In that narrow sense, a draft was needed.
However, the question is never whether to align, but how to align.
A faithful alignment would have reinforced the axiomatic principle: that under the new parliamentary system, the President and First Secretary elected at Congress shall be the Party's sole nominee to be elected as State President by Parliament.
It would have closed loopholes. Instead, the draft opens them. It introduces conditionality where there was certainty.
The Constitution should unify command, clarify accountability, and prevent the emergence of competing sovereignties. This draft does the opposite.
By severing the Party Presidency from the State candidacy, by asserting that a State President can be subjected to party disciplinary procedures, and by re-engineering the administrative levers of the Party to operate under the Secretary General and an unelected Director-General, it does not align the Party to the State Constitution. It aligns the State to a new Party oligarchy.
It creates, for the first time since 1963, the legal architecture for two centres of power: a Party President who controls the Party and can discipline the Government, and a State President who governs at the pleasure of Provincial Electoral Colleges.
History teaches that where Party and State are made to compete, the Party bureaucracy always wins.
If the aborting of the Politburo was to prevent this draft from being railroaded, then it was an act of institutional self-preservation. The task now is not to personalize the debate around Hon. Ziyambi, but to return to first principles.
Any amendment must restore the indivisibility of the two Presidencies, reaffirm that the Party's supremacy is exercised through its President and First Secretary, not against him, and ensure that administration remains a service to elected leadership, not a principal organ above it.

THE APPOINTMENT OF KUDAKWASHE TAGWIREI: A NEW LOW FOR THE SECOND REPUBLIC
The shocking appointment of Kudakwashe Tagwirei as Minister of Economic Development is a new low, even by the vacous standards of the self proclaimed Second Republic.
It is breathtaking arrogance and hubris on the part of Mnangagwa .A statement that he is untouchable and oblivious of the national mood and national interest.
We have consistently argued that the center of gravity of this regime is looting extraction and rent . No thing else.
It is this mafia mentality that has driven the 2030 Agenda and is bringing the country to a point of no return through the unrelenting pursuit of the ill fated Constitutional Amendment No. 3.
This appointment of Kuda conflates the the line between power and private enrichment. It is the personification of State Capture. The Gupturisation of the Republic .
THE ARCHBISHOP OF CORRUPTION
Kuda Tagwireyi is the kingpin of massive extraction . His shadow permeats every corridor of looting , from fuel , mines , construction , tenders , banks supermarkets and even churches .
He has an incestous relationship with Treasury , has received more Treasury Bills than anyone . and purely on the basis of conflict of interest can not be a government minister .
Tagwirei was a major beneficiary of Command Agriculture.
The Public Accounts Committee I chaired investigated his companies 2015-2018. We found over US$1 billion received, mostly in Treasury Bills. We could not find a single bag of maize or fertiliser delivered in return.
Those questions have never been answered.
On 20 Jan 2019 he received a US$360m Treasury Bill. Under SI 33 of 2019 all foreign obligations were converted to local currency. His TB escaped the haircut.
In June/July 2019 he flooded the market with that US dollar Bill and the RTGS collapsed. RBZ froze accounts, IMF raised concerns, then nothing.
He has benefited from numerous other Treasury Bills with no comprehensive account from the Minister of Finance.
Most notorious is the US$1.9bn payment for 35% of shares in Kuvimba Mining when it was placed under the Mutapa Fund.
The US$1.9 TB was paid out without valuations or justification .
This TB like Command Agriculture is a criminal docket on its own .
A VICE-LIKE GRIP ON FUEL
Tagwirei controls Zimbabwe's US$4bn fuel industry.
He was awarded the Dema diesel plant contract and ZESA was forced to buy power at 34 US cents per kWh while Eskom imports were 12 cents. The public paid the difference.
Millions of litres of duty-free diesel for Dema were mdiverted and sold on the market.
Zimbabweans pay some of the highest fuel prices in the region. A large part is levies and rents that ultimately end in Tagwireyi pockets.
A PATTERN THAT DEMANDS INVESTIGATION
He has been linked to land and title deeds, First Mutual Life shares, and shares in two major banks.
These need forensic audits, not political slogans: all TBs, Command Agriculture, Dema, fuel, Kuvimba, Mutapa , Trababalas Interchange. , roads churches .
To then place a criminal like Tagwireyi in a Treasury Ministry represonsible for national coffers is an act of treason. It brings the country into disrepute.
More so when the appointment itself is void Constitutional Amendment No. 3 is contested. Courts must decide. You cannot wish away the Constitution by exercising power.
THE CATTLE THIEF AND THE HERDSMAN
In Gandanzara village there was a notorious cattle thief, Faranisi .He stole goats, cattle, sheep and terrorized villages .
One day headman Zvaendwa of the Nyati totem appointed Faranisi to guard the village cattle.( kuenda kujana)
The village erupted. They went for Nyati and demanded he removes Faranisi.
The cattle thief has been appointed to herd the cattle.
We must not stay silent.
Cry, the beloved country. Cry.
