The Best Coach in Town Might Be Driving a Yellow School Bus at 3:00 PM. If I handed you two résumés with the names and logos removed, could you tell which coach was better? Coach A works at a Power Four university. They recruit nationally, charter flights, wear school-issued quarter-zips, and coach in front of 12,000 fans. Coach B teaches sophomore English, drives the activity bus home after road games, lines the practice field, and coaches in front of a few hundred people on a Tuesday night. So why do so many people automatically assume Coach A is the better coach? Somewhere along the way, we decided coaching ability works like a video game, you level up from youth sports to high school, then college, then the pros. But coaching isn’t an elevator. It doesn’t improve simply because the logo on your polo changes. After spending years around athletics at multiple levels, one thing has become crystal clear: Some of the finest pure coaches I’ve ever known have never coached a day of college or pro athletics. That surprises people because we’ve confused level with ability. Those aren’t the same thing. College coaches deserve enormous respect. Recruiting, NIL, the transfer portal, fundraising, compliance, travel, roster management, and media responsibilities require an incredible skill set. But those responsibilities don’t automatically make someone a better teacher of the game. In fact, they often mean coaches spend less time actually coaching. Meanwhile, many high school coaches spend every practice teaching footwork, fundamentals, communication, confidence, and decision-making because that’s exactly what their athletes need. One group may be building a roster. The other may be building players. I’ve watched high school coaches turn freshmen who struggled to make a left-handed layup into college athletes. I’ve seen football coaches design offenses worthy of higher levels, volleyball coaches diagnose flaws after one serve, wrestling coaches teach leverage like mechanical engineers, and baseball coaches develop average arms into elite pitchers. That’s coaching. Then comes the familiar line: “If they were really that good, they’d coach in college.” Would they? Or maybe they love teaching. Maybe they love seeing a freshman become a confident senior. Maybe they don’t want recruiting calls during family dinner. Maybe they actually enjoy seeing their spouse. Maybe the benefits are better at the HS level than the small college that is interested in them. Maybe they haven’t gotten that opportunity as there are very few jobs at those levels. Success isn’t always climbing the ladder. Sometimes it’s choosing the ladder you actually want to climb. Many outstanding high school coaches stay because that’s where they believe they can make the greatest impact. Here’s another truth. Talent can hide coaching. If you’re surrounded by future professionals every year, it’s difficult to know where talent ends and coaching begins. High school coaches rarely have that luxury. Many are expected to win with ordinary athletes. That’s like being handed clearance-aisle ingredients and being asked to prepare a five-star meal. The older I get, the less impressed I am by titles and the more impressed I am by real teachers. The coach who develops almost every player. The coach whose bench stays engaged. The coach whose former athletes return years later because someone changed their life. Those coaches exist everywhere. Great coaching has never cared about the size of the arena. It’s measured by growth, trust, relationships, and making people better than they believed they could become. So the next time someone says, “They’re just a high school coach,” remember this: The best coach in your town might be unlocking the gym at 5:30 a.m., teaching geometry all day, coaching until dinner, grading papers until bedtime, and changing a young person’s life somewhere in between. That sounds like a pretty elite coach to me.

Am a firm believer in playing good competition only helps teams in the long run. Don't shy away from playing teams who are better and (honestly) have more talent because it will help you in the end. Don't be afraid of meeting competition face to face and never back down!
