We have far more in common with our European neighbours than we do with Trumps America.
At the end of a week which has exposed the folly of the UK withdrawing from the European Union we have been on the streets of Leeds hearing views on Trump and what it means for us here in the UK. Conclusion? We share far more values with Europe than we do with Trump’s America.

With Trump’s victory the UK needs to be closer to the EU for all our sakes.
At the end of a significant week for world politics it’s time for a reappraisal of the UK’s place in the world. Now we must recognise that our interests lie in a Europe which shares our values, not in a USA which clearly does not. We have been making that point in Leeds today.

This changes everything. We in the UK need to recognise - fast - that it is not sustainable for us to be disconnected from our true friends in the world.
Keir Starmer now needs urgently to start talks about taking the UK back into the European mainstream.
