What happens when legal services meet people where they are? Legal Aid Alberta offers duty counsel office hours in several First Nations communities across Alberta, reducing barriers such as transportation to court by helping Indigenous people access free legal advice closer to home. The Mînî Thnî duty counsel pilot project, launched two years ago, has since expanded to other communities across Alberta. The approach grew from listening to communities, building relationships and working together to find solutions that respond to local needs. 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘁𝘂 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 Legal Aid Alberta was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chief Justice Ritu Khullar. As Chief Justice of Alberta and Chief Justice of the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories, Chief Justice Khullar was deeply committed to protecting access to justice and upholding the rule of law. She was defined by the thoughtfulness, compassion, integrity and intelligence she brought to a remarkable career in private practice and, later, the judiciary. Her service to Albertans and to Canada continues to inspire us, and her legacy will endure through the generations of legal professionals who follow in her footsteps. On behalf of Legal Aid Alberta's Board of Directors and staff, I extend our deepest condolences to Chief Justice Khullar's family, friends and colleagues.
