Lindel Fields got his first moment in the spotlight Thursday in Tulsa after a 30-year career of working mostly behind the scenes to teach and then lead vocational-technical education. #oklaed tulsaworld.com/news/local/ed…
Apologies for missing the next 3 items on the action agenda -- was catching up on a couple of notes. They're now on to citizens comments.
Resolution regarding Central's mascot imagery passes 6-1. E. Ashley again casts the lone no vote & says its erasing history.
When asked, Johnson reiterates that Webster, Central would keep their mascots. This would change the imagery.
Branding policy passes 6-1 with a no vote from E. Ashley. Now to branding elements at the the individual campuses. Webster first.
On to the action agenda. The estimate of needs passes 7-0 without discussion or debate. On to the branding policy...
Have a Webster alum now at the podium reading FB comments in support of keeping the school's mascot, branding. Apologies, but didn't catch his name.
Next is a Tulsa Native Youth Board senior. Greets the board in Cherokee, then asks that the board not make their vote for the alumni association or for her, but for students who are still to come. "We are not your mascot."
Have the chairwoman of the Title VI podium at the microphone. "We want our students to feel included. I’m the parent of 4 TPS students and they don’t look alike. They don’t look like the images depicted."
"This is not simply a mascot for us. It’s a connection to our families. To remove it would risk erasing an important part of our community." (Apologies for not including her name, but I'm not sure on the spelling.)
Now have a Webster graduate at the podium, asking the board to vote down the proposed policy. Says the school's alumni association circulated a petition that garnered 1300 signatures in support of keeping the school's mascot, logo.
Have a TPS graduate calling in in support of the proposed mascot policy. "We have to fight for every inch of dignity."
We're on public comment. One of the speakers is a TPS Indian Ed resource adviser & TPS parents. She begins to cry at the podium, describing her experience being bullied as a Native student growing up in TPS.
