How do you target a #cancer that shape-shifts? Look at #metabolism, not identity.
#SCLC cells switch state (#plasticity) but all
need cysteine. ASCL1 decides how they die: #apoptosis or #ferroptosis.

Replying to @DMSabatini
@DMSabatini ‘ s contributions to science are extraordinary.
No verdict can restore lost years. No financial compensation can undo the prolonged psychological stress, its toll on mental health and personal life, or the damage to a brilliant scientific career.
I sincerely hope this marks the beginning of a new chapter for David, one filled with many more smiles. May it also serve as a powerful reminder that evidence, fairness and due process must always come before public judgment and condemnation.
Science needs brilliant minds, but above all, we must never forget the human beings behind them.

“The question should not be how many papers you published, but what you discovered.”
A powerful reminder from @dixitvishva. Science is about curiosity, persistence, and the courage to challenge what we think we know. Great discoveries, not publication counts, define scientific progress.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Like many scientists of my generation, I entered the cell death field inspired by the work that came from Genentech, especially from @dixitvishva , Kim Newton, and their colleagues.
Their discoveries did more than define apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis and inflammatory signalling. They showed us what rigorous, elegant, and transformative science looks like. They also demonstrated that deep, curiosity-driven basic research could thrive within biotechnology and change medicine.
Watching these departures is therefore not just news. For many of us, it feels personal.
Yet the cell death field has taught us an important lesson: death is rarely the end of the story.
In biology, death creates opportunities for renewal, adaptation, and transformation. The scientific legacy built by these extraordinary scientists cannot be erased by a reorganisation chart. Their discoveries have shaped an entire field and inspired generations of researchers who will carry those ideas forward.
This is not the end.

Reading the comments both under this post and under Nature’s obituary of Watson, it is impossible not to see how deeply ingrained sexism and abuse of power still are in science and beyond. Rosalind Franklin’s case was not only a tragedy of erasure, but an example of how authority and privilege once dictated who was allowed to define discovery itself. What is shocking is how many still defend the indefensible, revealing an almost atavistic belief in superiority and entitlement — the same mindset that enabled the abuse of power against Franklin in the first place
Getting Rosalind Franklin’s story right is crucial, because she has become a role model for women going into science

Together with my fantastic co-senior and co-corresponding author @vonKarstedtLab , we uncovered that the BTK inhibitor ibrutinib has a previously unrecognized role in disrupting redox balance and priming DLBCL cells for ferroptosis.
We show that ibrutinibchemically scavenges glutathione (GSH) and represses GPX4 translation, thereby amplifying lipid ROS and triggering ferroptotic cell death. This defines ferroptosis as a mechanistic foundation for additive therapy in aggressive and apoptosis-resistant DLBCL.
This was a truly collaborative effort, driven by the exceptional first author Anuschka Langpape. Deep thanks also to all authors and our brilliant collaborators across Cologne for their creativity, hard work, and committment.
