You may have heard the story of Simon of HMS Amethyst, the only cat to be awarded the Dicken Medal for gallantry under fire, but did you know of Simon the Second? When Simon I passed away in 1949, a pet shop offered to send a three-month-old kitten to take over the ship's rat-catching duties. The crew unanimously voted to accept the kitten and name him Simon II. The kitten arrived at the ship by taxi and was warmly welcomed with a special dinner.
