We measured the effects of more AI coding agents, with the same conclusion: Development velocity (commits, lines added) increases, but it is short lived, and it comes at the cost of code quality and technical debt (static analysis warnings and code complexity go up substantially)

Sequoia partner @sonyatweetybird says we're going from the age of product-led growth to the age of agent-led growth. "You see this most clearly if you're using Claude Code actively. It says, 'Hey, for a database, you should use Supabase. For hosting, use Vercel.' It's choosing for you, the stuff you should be using." "Product-led growth brought us closer to the vision of 'best product wins,' but ultimately people are still lazy. They can't read all the reviews, and they kind of default to what looks cool on the website." "Whereas your agent has infinite time to go and make these choices for you. It can go and read all the documentation, read all the user comments, and figure out [what you need] for your use case."

Working on recommendation letters for students applying for PhD/MS. Multiple sources say this year will be tough, as PhD/MS openings will be fewer especially in traditional CS/ECE areas, e.g., not AI related [1]. My suggestion is to apply more broadly and more targetedly. There are still many excellent colleagues who are looking for grad students. You can find some of them in the comments of this LinkedIn post, linkedin.com/feed/update/urn… [1] In fact, AI today means everything CS, and I argue that AI needs more domain experts than ever.

LLMs can get "Brain Rot"! Continual pretraining on junk, high-engagement web text causes lasting "cognitive decline" in LLMs, reducing reasoning, long-context, and safety performance. The main failure mode is thought-skipping, where models skip reasoning steps and adopt “dark” personality traits like narcissism and low agreeableness. Even strong mitigations such as reflection or further fine-tuning only partially reverse the damage, making data curation a critical safety concern for AI training.
