The stars have truly aligned for the Dems to win the Senate in every single way: - Roy Cooper and Jon Ossoff lock up NC and GA - Sherrod Brown decides to mount a comeback in OH even though it's a two year term - Mary Peltola runs in AK, passing up a guaranteed governor win - The GOP nominates Ken Paxton in TX and the Dems nominate a S tier candidate with James Talarico making it competitive - The same thing plays out in KS with Roger Marshall and Adam Hamilton - and also in SC with Darline Graham and Annie Andrews! - And in MI and IA, the GOP imploding in the governors races in those states has locked up MI for Abdul and has given Turek a great shot in IA - Dem aligned independents in NE, MT, SD, and ID stretch the field (with Dan Osborn having a great shot in NE) - But wait, it's not all bad for the GOP, the Dems nominated a scandal-ridden dumpsterfire of a candidate in ME: hold on, you're telling me they got him to drop out with nothing to gain? You simply couldn't imagine this in 2024 even if you tried to write a Dem wishcast fanfiction

I wasn’t expecting walking down the middle of the newly pedestrianised Oxford Street to feel so lovely (never a word I’ve used for Oxford St before!). It instantly feels like something that should have been done years ago. Well done, @MayorofLondon, for finally getting it done.

If LA built like this, SoCal would be the best place on earth.
Best ROI in LA: turn a boat parking lot -- boats!! -- into Courtyard Urbanism. Housing can be beautiful. Marina Del Rey:

💯 Housing is a math problem. It costs more to build than housing is worth — bc cities/the State add extra expenses. We put too much straw on the camels back - fees, delays, bad rules - and lo and behold, it stopped penciling. The question now is: what kind of housing do we want to unlock so it pencils?
Every city has lots like this. Land is rarely the constraint. Time is: how long it takes to get a home designed, approved and built on it. xitter.cf/LindsayJS/status/21148…

Step 1: make the street great Step 2: build housing
London’s iconic Oxford Street will be pedestrianised between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street from today onwards. (bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmzx…)

Chicago, now Victoria, BC ... the city planners are all becoming courtyard urbanists. It's amazing, wonderful to see. The explanation here is amazing. You will recognize a lot of the language and themes, here. A coincidence? "To support the realization of Vision 2050, the perimeter block form is envisioned for the Residential Fabric" "The perimeter block form locates new development along the outer edge of residential blocks, with principal facades oriented towards fronting streets and interior court yards. This front-to-back orientation of buildings creates and preserves green open space in back yards while defining and activating streets. Over time, interior courtyards can become more contiguous with connected uses, amenities, and ecological functions. The form enables a greater number and diversity of homes to be developed in low-carbon built forms while achieving social and environmental benefits." BRAVISSIMIA VICTORIA
Victoria, BC is reducing minimum front setbacks in order to support future perimeter blocks, as parcels on a block are redeveloped. morehousing.ca/victoria-ocp

In Oslo, 79% of children walk to school. 79% is an ASTONISHINGLY high rate! Oslo children can walk to school because they live NEAR their school. Oslo is made up of courtyard blocks, which create a form of urban density that works beautifully for families because it provides a YARD
“Family sized” doesn’t mean family friendly. None of these units passes the kitchen window test—can you see your kids playing in a yard from your kitchen window Love to see single stair advancing and housing being built Still a long way to go before we are at family-friendly density

I love this - but it still looks silly just sticking up there. There’s so much to be said for streets of ~one height.
A reminder: when they build those skinny mid block towers, they don’t have to suck

So moving
Maybe this is crazy. But a woman who built herself up from being a homeless child to an accomplished physician, seems preferable to a man born into the privileges of private education and frequent international family vacations but never learned decency.

Spectacular storefront design. Made me stop, turn around, and text friends about it. Color and thoughtful design are so important to a street’s vibrancy and a small business’s success!

America is number one. At killing pedestrians. But we can’t redesign streets to be safer because it might slow down emergency response. To the already-dead pedestrian. Caused by the street design.
WSJ front page: American roads becoming deadlier for peds Austin has long req’d 25’ of clear fire access, the standard fire code requires 20’. Wider streets encourage dangerous speeds We need to build fire trucks around the city we want, not build our city around fire trucks

Unironically, every new hospital should have a beautiful one of these at it’s heart. That would be provably good for the physical & mental health of patients and staff. You can read more about how and why…
