We are leaning to farm. Had our first hydroponic station installed. In addition to learning tangible skills, eg data collection and monitoring PH,EC & water flow, they are learning patience. #STEM #microschools #PKLA

I definitely think we don’t focus enough on the socio-emotional aspects of child development. Which is very difficult to do if the majority of a child’s day is spent on academics and homework. Balance is key. #microschools
We often focus on what children should know when they leave school, but how they enter school matters too. A child who can listen, share, manage frustration and get along with others has a much stronger starting point for learning. Academic readiness gets plenty of attention, but learning to care about others, listen and take turns is just as important in those early years. And, of course, these skills need practice, patience and good examples from the adults around them.

I like that the discussion around school choice is shifting beyond academics to include conversations around character development and values. #microschools

The Most Important Exercise Advice May Be the Simplest We have quite the bubble here... many are running sub-3 marathons... some much more than that... but the reality for most people is that they average 4-5k steps/day. I love when the science catches up to what we’ve observed in the office for decades. It’s always been clear that those who are able to move the most… thrive. Far better than those who are sedentary. And oftentimes… any movement works. The American College of Cardiology just published a new scientific statement on exercise prescription. The central message is simple: the biggest cardiovascular benefit often comes from going from doing nothing to doing something. The relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular risk is not linear. The largest absolute risk reduction occurs when a sedentary person becomes modestly active. More activity can add benefit, but the gains become smaller as volume rises. The statement still recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, along with resistance training for most adults. But it also emphasizes that some movement is better than none, and that exercise should be safe, individualized, achievable, and sustainable. It also reinforces another important point: meeting an exercise target doesn't fully offset spending most of the rest of the day sitting. You can train in the morning and still be highly sedentary afterward. Meaningful benefit appears at lower levels than the ever-present 10,000 steps per day we see online. Observational data link around 7,000 steps per day to substantial reductions in cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The bottom line: move more, sit less, lift something regularly, and choose a level you can keep doing… even on your worst day. h/t to @EricTopol, who posted this article first. , jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.…

Changed the #JAHeritageWeek project this year. Instead of identifying the heroes around us my students and I talked about what heroic endeavor would they want to undertake. Our young people can be so creative and insightful when given the space to be.

This is what persons with #dementia need - constant care and stimulation from those who know them well. And yet because it’s so difficult to watch the decline so many of their friends stop visiting. Compounding the decline.
Grandson sings β€œHey Good Lookin’” to his grandma with dementia and suddenly, her eyes light up with joy and memories. This will leave your hearts both smiling and in tears. [πŸ“Ή grannieannie03]

Does this kind of training exist for caregivers in Jamaica?
Family caregivers learn to do things most of us never expect: wound care, feeding tubes, medication management, medical equipment. Training makes the difference. Share your story and help expand access. πŸ”— surveymonkey.com/r/6TSB5WY #CaregiverTraining #ShareYourStory
