Last week in Perth I joined the @AIinstitute Australia-India Defence Industry Roundtable alongside Land Forces.
I spoke about Australia’s defence strategy, the Australia-India defence relationship, and how far that relationship has come. There are a number of challenges, and some barriers we should be realistic about, but also many opportunities.
In 2014–15 I was involved in planning the first #AUSINDEX naval exercise between Australia and India. Just over a decade later, the relationship is much deeper and broader, spanning exercises, defence industry, technology and as reiterated by the Australia-India Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation.
India is critical to the Indian Ocean security, and the Australia-India defence relationship is vital to our own maritime security.
Thanks to the Australia India Institute for inviting me, and to The Hon. @Lisa_Singh , Grant Wyeth & Teesta Prakash for bringing the discussion together.

🌱 Powering Change: Dr Vibha Dhawan Highlights Global Partnerships for Sustainability
@DrVibhaDhawan, Director General, TERI, delivered the 2026 Annual Oration, “𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚-𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩,” at the Australia India Institute's Melbourne Global Centre in New Delhi on 9 October 2026. The session opened with remarks by Prof. Moira O'Bryan, Dean, Faculty of Science, The University of Melbourne.
Dr Dhawan highlighted the widening gap between global commitments and action on sustainable development and climate change, cautioning that “we have stopped talking about sustainable development goals.” She also underscored the importance of international collaboration in advancing sustainable solutions, citing the TERI-Deakin Nanobiotechnology Centre's work on nanobiofertilisers.
The oration was followed by an “In Conversation” session with The Hon. @Lisa_Singh, CEO, Australia India Institute, exploring women's leadership, innovation, sustainability and international partnerships. Prof. Frank Vetere, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global, The University of Melbourne, delivered the concluding remarks.

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha also known as the God of knowledge, wealth, and new beginnings. It is observed with great devotion for 10 days, during which elaborately crafted idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes and public pandals and worshipped.
Culminating in a grand procession called the "Visarjan" or immersion, the idols are immersed in water bodies such as rivers, lakes, or the sea, symbolising the return of Lord Ganesha to his celestial abode.
May this festive occasion bring happiness and joy for everyone celebrating.
The passing of Agni Deo is very sad news. An excellent MP for Fiji. Fond memories of our time together in Sydney. My heartfelt condolences to my aunty and her family in Fiji at the sudden loss of her brother. RIP.
