Exclusive: The Cabinet is split over Britain’s future relationship with Europe after the Prime Minister opened the door to Britain rejoining the European Union, The i Paper can reveal.
A narrow majority of Andy Burnham's ministers now back a return to bloc, but they are divided over a second referendum, the timing, and whether Labour risks refighting the toxic Brexit wars.
Most ministers are understood to be coming round to the view that a second referendum will be unavoidable, if only to stop a future Conservative or Reform UK government from reversing the decision.
“The EU needs to know this is what Britain really wants," one source said familiar with the discussions said.
The Prime Minister is expected to use the forthcoming UK-EU summit in November as a springboard for a national debate about Britain's place in Europe.
