The 872 km fiber cable connecting Tonga to the outside world may have been broken by the eruption, per operator Southern Cross.
Unlike landing station power issues, physical cable repairs can take weeks depending on the depth of the damaged segment. Wishing for a speedy recovery
ℹ️ Communications with the Pacific island nation of #Tonga remain difficult following a massive undersea volcano eruption, with internet service remaining down.
The subsea cable operator has reported likely physical damage, and efforts are underway to strengthen satellite links.
