Striking detail in the big NYT piece on Taiwanese families adjusting to working at the huge new TSMC chip plant in Arizona: their surprise at the lack of rigor in US schools.
Beautiful day at Spreckels Lake. A man who looks like Einstein has built a working scale model of a scull rowed by Bruce Lee. I love SF.
I took photos that day: xitter.cf/loh/status/13685613225…
Ten years ago, I was walking in Golden Gate Park near Spreckels Lake, when suddenly I saw something incredible and very San Francisco @brucelee #ShotOniPhone3G

the trouble with being terminally online is most people are not and so as informed as you are you will be cut off from the mentality and will that is keeping society going despite all that you know - an ignorance in an actually limited omniscience

Take 2 hours this weekend to improve your personal opsec. Some ways to get through the agent security apocalypse - give the list to your agent to help:
- ask Claude to scan the devices visible on your local network and fix + improve your security and highlight potentially vulnerable devices
- look up your home IP on Shodan or Censys. Check whether anything like a NAS, camera, router admin interface or development server is exposed to the public internet.
- roll your wi-fi password, move all internet of things devices to a guest network. Only primary devices on the main network
- ask Claude to scan your machine and harden your security settings
- switch to an Eero or Ubiquity router, you can’t afford to have WiFi that isn’t regularly getting firmware updates
- have Claude audit your router settings and suggest improvements
- setup tailscale for your devices (and replace Tailscale's default allow-all policy with restrictive grants)
- turn on Advanced Data Protection and Lockdown Mode on your iPhone
- buy a hardware key (@Yubico etc) and turn it on for as many accounts as possible. Delete other MFA methods, print out your recovery keys (don’t save them on your computer). ESPECIALLY important for your primary email account
- delete old cloud accounts that you do not strictly need anymore
- export your ChatGPT + Claude history, save it on an encrypted external HD and delete it from being online
- audit your Gmail oauth connections, revoke everything you don’t strictly need
- freeze your credit at the 3 bureaus (reduces impersonation risk)

Tailscale replied on Reddit:
Hi folks, Mike Shaver here, VP of Engineering at Tailscale.
We've seen the concerns about Tailscale SSH and wanted to share what we know so far.
If you want to jump to the most important part, based on our current assessment, we're not recommending that everyone disable Tailscale SSH.
We've now received the researcher's report and are reviewing it. Our engineering and security teams had already been investigating independently, with help from external security specialists. That work has identified issues we're working to fix. We're still validating the full scope, including which configurations are affected.
A bit of technical context:
Tailscale SSH uses your tailnet's access policies to control who can connect to which machines. Most of the issues we've identified so far concern what happens after someone has been authorized to connect, particularly how Unix privileges and SSH forwarding are handled. In some cases, a session may be able to do more than the configured local user should be allowed to do.
While it’s a serious concern, it isn't the same as an unauthenticated attacker being able to connect to arbitrary machines, but the potential impact depends on how SSH access is configured. We're still investigating, so we don't want to make blanket claims about what's affected or not.
Again, based on our current assessment, we're not recommending that everyone disable Tailscale SSH.
In the meantime, there are a few precautions you can take:
•Review your SSH access policies. Make sure only the people and devices that need access have it.
•Review SSH forwarding permissions and remove access you don't need.
•Consider enabling SSH check mode for an additional authentication step. This won't fix privilege escalation issues, but it does add another barrier to gaining access.
•Enable automatic updates where supported so you can pick up fixes when they're released.
For particularly sensitive systems, consider temporarily tightening your Tailscale SSH access policies while we investigate, so that only the specific users and devices that need access can connect.
We're working on fixes and testing them carefully. We'll publish a security advisory explaining the confirmed findings, affected configurations, recommended actions and available patches. We'll also follow up with a more detailed technical write-up.
If we find anything that changes our assessment or requires immediate customer action, we'll communicate that.
We know it's been a rough week for security teams, and we understand why people are concerned. We'd rather give you the technical context we have than speculate about things we haven't confirmed yet.
We'll share more as we verify the details. If you have any questions about how this relates to your particular environment, please get in touch with our team tailscale.com/contact/suppor…

"My wife has a Grok Bot at home, but she calls it the Trad bot for trad wife."
"We have 6 little kids. It's telling us about our kids' health appointments and activities, and trying to figure out my 2-year-old, how to deprecate his binky right now."
"It's telling me when to and when not to give it to him. It's pretty funny."

“Elon Musk just put ~$1B into Skydance - the new media giant from Paramount’s $110B takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fresh equity for a company sitting on ~$80B in debt while chasing $6B in cost cuts. Came alongside checks from Laurene Powell Jobs and other backers.
Deepens the Musk–Ellison ties: Larry previously put $1B into Musk’s X deal and personally guaranteed $40B+ for this one. Now Musk has a stake in the owner of CNN, CBS, HBO, and more.”
