Sad, difficult week approaching tomorrow – the one-year anniversary of my old man dying – but also a huge, life-affirming privilege to have watched Club Kid, You Can See Everything and Godzilla Minus Zero in the same timeframe. He would have loved ’em, too. Art can really help.

Anna, the FT example is a family earning £436,000, with two properties, private schooling and luxury holidays. That’s extraordinary privilege, not ordinary middle-class hardship. And pension contributions aren’t tax; they’re retained wealth.
I think it’s entirely fair that those fortunate enough to earn so much contribute substantially more to the society that enables their prosperity. The real scandal is how many families struggle to afford the basics, not how much disposable income remains for people earning nearly half a million pounds.
