Toward finer-grained text-music alignment evaluation 🎵
A global score can't show what's missing. MQAScore checks musical concepts across 5 dimensions with an LALM.

Per-dimension scores are diagnostic: some TTM systems generate vocals, others don't. Global similarity barely reflects it; MQAScore's vocal dimension does.
Much more on the demo page ☝️: non-cherry-picked results on SOTA TTM systems, with audio and per-concept scores.

We further show that the generation quality can be improved by adjusting classifier-free guidance (CFG) to better balance different conditioning signals.
5/N
The results are encouraging!
Combining melody + phoneme conditioning achieves the best overall balance between melodic consistency and lyrical accuracy.
4/N
We further investigate different levels of phoneme arrangement and temporal resolution.
Our results show that finer-grained phoneme-level control provides better control over lyrical accuracy and temporal alignment.
3/N
We propose MPEcho, which extends SongEcho (melody guided) with explicit phoneme-level conditioning.
We also introduce Phonsa, a Whisper-based phoneme alignment and segmentation framework for singing voices.
2/N
A key challenge in CSG is preserving the melody while generating accurate lyrics.
Inspired by the precise phoneme-level control used in Singing Voice Synthesis (SVS), we bring this fine-grained control into full-song generation for more accurate and controllable CSG.

NEW paper from Apple.
Interesting idea: "Attention to Mamba".
The paper introduces a two-stage recipe for cross-architecture distillation from Transformers into Mamba.
Naive distillation collapses teacher performance. Their trick: first distill the transformer into a linearized-attention student using a kernel adaptation, then transfer that student into a pure Mamba with no attention blocks.
On a 1B model trained on 10B tokens, the Mamba student hits 14.11 perplexity against a 13.86 Pythia-1B teacher, nearly matching quality at linear-time inference cost.
If you can reliably convert trained transformers into state-space models without retraining from scratch, the entire open-weights ecosystem becomes cheaper to serve at long context. This is the kind of quiet infrastructure work that decides which architectures actually get deployed in agent stacks.

Too many REPA / RAE / representation alignment papers lately?
I was lost too, so I wrote a blog post that organizes the space into phases and zooms in on what actually matters for general/molecular ML.
Curious what folks think - link below!
