Late to the party, but chuffed to be shortlisted for Consumer Staff Writer of the Year at #TravMediaAwards @TravMedia_UK. @NatGeoTravelUK has also been nominated for mag of the year, website of the year, feature of the year (twice!) and rising star of the year. What a team!
In Sri Lanka today, I witnessed a terrible thing on the Kandy to Ella train. I didn’t say ‘hey that’s dangerous’ when I saw a girl lean out the open door for a selfie. Wish I had. An hr later her friend did it, smashed her head going into a tunnel at speed and fell off the train – at Sri Lanka
People started shrieking and the train pulled up impressively fast. We feared the worst. But the train guards found her and unbelievably she was in one piece (we all thought she’d gone under), albeit with a head injury. She was stretchered off at the next stop – at Sri Lanka
And I won! Thanks so much to @Inspire__Global for picking my piece on the communities in India’s Himalayan foothills that are championing bird watching tourism. @villageways do amazing work and I can’t recommend their tours enough.

Me, arriving back to -1c London from 30c Vietnam with no warm clothes on a national rail strike day, trying to get home to Leeds. First thing I see when I land at Heathrow is that my train has been cancelled:
