You get one vote every five years. You've been told that's your democracy. Lucky you.
But when did you last vote? Did your party win? If so, did you get what you wanted? Or did it come bundled with policies you disagreed with?
Or perhaps you lost, and your vote was forgotten by the morning.
What if I told you there was another democracy? One where you vote every day. Where your vote is counted immediately, is always heard, and the promises are always delivered on — or a full refund.
You actually live in two democracies.
The first is the ballot box, the one you've been convinced is the epitome of freedom and choice.
The second is the economy, where every pound you spend is a vote on how you live your life — a democracy where every vote matters.
Politicians know which one holds real power. So they keep expanding into the parts of life the market already runs better, and they hide the cost in taxes engineered so you can never quite add them up.
I break down how that works: where government earns its mandate, where it oversteps, and why your most powerful vote isn't on a ballot.
“Slavers were careful not to bring their slaves to Britain, lest they gain freedom simply by setting foot ashore”.
Britain paid over 40,000 slave owners for losing their slaves.
That’s not a lot.
Only 3000 were based in Britain. That’s even fewer.
But around 1 in 5 wealthy Victorians made money from slavery. That is only about 13,000 people.
The reality is that very few of the British people had anything to do with slavery. The majority who benefited from it were not the tax paying British public.
In fact, the British public rejected it. Firstly rejecting products like Blood Sugar, then by ending slavery itself.
Not just in Britain. Globally.
This wasn’t reparations, it was principle. It was kind hearts, just cause and standing up for what’s right.
They ended slavery with their lives and with their money. The British people’s money.
They ended slavery perpetrated by white people, by brown people and by black people. They ended it everywhere.
And while only a handful of wealthy Britons benefited from slavery, EVERY tax-paying Briton paid off the cost of ending slavery for the next 180 years.
In fact, if you paid UK tax before 2016, you will have contributed to this global good too.
They didn’t pay the slave owners compensation. They bought the slaves for the sole intention of setting them free. It was the only way they could do it peacefully - or even at all.
The tax-paying British public don’t owe reparations. Far from it.
Now you know the truth, you can make up your own mind on what they’re really owed.
The British public is unable to grasp the ballooning impact on house prices of government sponsored purchases and rentals.
They use your taxes to out compete you for a home.
The cost of living crisis is a cost of government crisis.
Britain is poor.
And weirdly, every time the government gives you more money or insists you’re paid more, we get poorer.
If you don’t understand WHY that happens, just accept that it does and move aside for the grown ups.
Here’s how it works.
The government forces up wages which increase costs for everyone.
Not just wages, the whole supply chain.
The business owner has to sell THOUSANDS more pies every week to people who are already full.
But pies are more expensive so fewer people can afford to buy them. Instead of more pies sold, less pies are bought and so some businesses go out of business due to lack of customers.
The remaining pies shops sell pricier pies to a more elite class of pie consumer.
Rinse and repeat at the next Budget.
Eventually, pies are only for the rich and the government declares that capitalism has failed and the only way to solve the problem is government run pie shops.
You’ve gone from socialism to communism. All viable businesses have collapsed and there is a wall to keep you from fleeing the system.
This isn’t make believe, it’s the historical record.
NB: this isn’t about pies.
It’s not ‘unviable’ businesses who can’t pay minimum wage. It’s unviable policies which delete jobs in the economy.
Let’s be clear, the government has raised the cost of a minimum wage employee by nearly THREE times more than prices rose in the last ten years.
And increased wages DRIVES price increases and the cost of living.
This is why you have to pay an unskilled migrant worker almost as much as the average University Graduate!
The result, 1 million NEETs.
It’s a death spiral.
So, people who HAD viable businesses 10 years ago but haven’t kept up with the government wage policies… now don’t have viable businesses?
Now those jobs are gone.
Congratulations, you got’em…
Yet another reminder: if you can't afford to pay your staff enough to live on you don't have a viable business. #budget26
Kemi said the average Briton pays £4000 per year in tax on benefits.
That’s not true. Benefits make up about almost 30% of the budget, the average worker pays £8500 tax, so they will contribute £2,550 per year on benefits.
What could YOU do with that money?
Hope all the children enjoy their pocket money from mommy.
You either have a small government and a free people, or a big government and live in tyranny.
Choose your side.
They can’t buy my vote with someone else’s money.

Why high tax economies destroy wealth:
If you have £1 and double it 20 times, no tax, you get £1,050,000.
Taxed each double by 25%, you end up with just £70,000.
At 47% - UK top rate of tax - you’d end up with under £5,000!
The government does not invest.
Does she understand there’s a difference between spending and investment?
'Taxes are high because we need to invest in Britain', says Angela Rayner

If socialists understood economics, they wouldn’t be socialists.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply.
Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply.
Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents.

The government is strangling Britain and the British people.
The next election must bring in a radically small government party.
Everything is at stake.
NOTHING is more important to Labour than paying tax.
They don’t care about your life and circumstances.
They want your money.
That’s it.
The bigger the state, the smaller the state’s resources.
A tale as old as time.
Laffer curve latest: big increases in the tax burden have reduced tax revenues as companies have been pushed into bankruptcy.
Business insolvencies rose 39% between 2019-20 and 2025-26 as higher taxes and soaring costs caused firms to collapse. HMRC lost £13bn as a consequence.
Nimesh Shah of accountants Blick Rothenberg said: “The UK tax burden is at its highest levels in modern peace time and changes to tax, labour laws and the minimum wage increase have added significant burden to businesses".
“The irony is that the Government increasing the tax burden has had the effect of increasing HMRC’s tax losses.”
Sounds a lot like Labour’s plan for Britain.
Politics is about one choice. Who makes the decisions about your life: you? Or a bureaucrat.
