The work embodies the goals of the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Cancer Ecosystems Project: understanding and therapeutically targeting the complex cellular ecosystems that shape cancer.
Very grateful as well for the support of @TheMarkFdn & everyone who made this work possible
This work was an incredible team effort with co-first authors @ClemensHinterleitner, @ValentinBarthet and Hailey Goldberg, co-corresponding authors Dan Heller, Aveline Filliol, and many amazing collaborators. & check out the MSK blog post here! bit.ly/3TqTqqZ
Together, our findings highlight how targeting specific pathogenic senescent cell states—rather than senescent cells broadly—may offer a more precise way to treat fibrosis and improve cancer therapy.
In fibrosis-associated cancers, these same macrophages contribute to an immune-suppressive, therapy-resistant microenvironment. Targeting them with SMNPs increased immune infiltration and sensitized otherwise refractory tumors to immunotherapy.
Selectively delivering senolytic/senomorphic therapies remodeled fibrotic microenvironments, reduced fibrosis & improved organ function. Nanoparticle delivery also reduced toxicity associated with the free drug, overcoming a major limitation of systemic senotherapeutic treatment.
Excited to share our new paper, out today in @ScienceMagazine! We developed senescence-modulating nanoparticles (SMNPs) that target P-selectin+ pathogenic senescent-like macrophages in fibrotic tissues and tumors.

Special thanks to her co-mentors @Clemens2Hinterl and @vBarthet! Congratulations, Dr. Goldberg!! 🥳@MSKCancerCenter
We are proud to celebrate the successful thesis defense of Lowe lab grad student Hailey Goldberg @WeillCornellGS, who presented her work on senescence biology in fibrotic tissue and tumors. An inspiring presentation & a terrific body of work!
I'm deeply grateful for everything he brought to our science and our community, and incredibly proud to see him take this next step. Excited to watch what comes next, José! -SWL
This photo, from the last Lowe lab party at CSHL, captures something I will always treasure. Greg and I were a team: different, but deeply aligned, and united by a love of science and the people who make it possible. -SWL Photo: Constance Brukin.
Greg also gave generously to @MSKCC as a member of our Board of Scientific Counselors. He brought the same clarity, candor, and expansive scientific vision that defined his own work, helping us think more boldly about discovery, technology, and impact.
It was a privilege to reflect on the life and legacy of Greg Hannon in an obituary published in Cell, co-authored with Julius Brennecke. Collaborating on this was a gift: a chance to reminisce, remember, and try to capture what made Greg so extraordinary. bit.ly/4elZcAU
Deeply grateful to the Pershing Square Foundation for supporting innovative research in this urgent area of women’s health. @MSKCancerCenter @hhmi_science
In collaboration with Dr. Carol Aghajanian, we will focus on targeting uPAR on residual cancer cells and the supportive tissue environment that enables relapse.
The lab is honored to receive a 2026 Lotus Award from @PershingSqFdn to support our work developing new therapeutic approaches for ovarian cancer.
My sincere thanks to the Kraft family and to @MassGenBrigham for this very special recognition. The personalized @Patriots jersey was a generous and unexpected touch that made the day even more memorable. -SWL
I am deeply honored to receive the Kraft Prize for Excellence in Cancer Research from @MassGenBrigham. It is especially meaningful to be recognized for work that reflects the efforts of many extraordinary colleagues, trainees, & collaborators @MSKCancerCenter & @hhmi_science -SWL
