I have the sense that most economists are not aware that NSF funding of economics may be about to disappear.
The Trump administration has proposed dissolving the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), potentially beginning this year. While the FY2027 Presidential Budget Request proposes eliminating SBE, reporting suggests that steps toward dissolution may already be underway within NSF. Dissolving SBE would discontinue almost all NSF support for economic research and professional activities like professional conferences.
The economy is changing rapidly, and it is crucial that businesses and policymakers understand what is happening in the economy and how changes in economic policy affect households, workers, businesses, and financial markets.
Businesses need this understanding in order to make myriad crucial decisions. So do policymakers, like the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Congress.
If you care about giving businesses and policymakers the information they need to understand the world and to make the smartest, most informed decisions they can make, then you should support funding for NSF and for SBE.
Funding for NSF and specifically for SBE should be increased, not cut.

Last week, @AnthropicAI said its new model Mythos had already found “thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities” and could “surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.”
At almost the same moment, the Axios hack showed how exposed the open-source foundation under modern software still is.
For this week’s 10 Minutes or Less, I spoke with @feross what this moment means. WATCH:

Cutting spending on infrastructure to fix the budget is the tyranny of senseless accounting over economics, especially in the UK where lagging regions badly need more of it.
The north is already starved of infrastructure.
So why is Sunak thinking about getting rid of HS2?

One of the hardest parts of raising your first round of funding is knowing who to pitch.
To make the process easier for founders just starting out, @kanjun and I put together a list of 18 funds that seem to consistently invest at the very earliest stage.

A good look by @WendyEdelberg & @lsheiner on the potential costs associated with crossing the debt limit X Date. We should not be complacent about the current situation
"Even if the debt limit were raised quickly so that it only was binding for a few days, there would likely be lasting damage." Read more in a new blog from @WendyEdelberg and Louise Sheiner on the dangers of playing fast and loose with the debt limit: bit.ly/3zNQ0yW
