Pore blockage: Excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells and debris accumulate inside a hair follicle.
Blackhead formation: The opening remains exposed to air, causing the accumulated material to oxidise and turn dark.
Inflammation: The blocked follicle becomes inflamed, sometimes due to acne-related bacteria and immune activity.
Deeper lesion: In severe cases, inflammation damages the follicle wall, allowing its contents to enter surrounding tissue.
Cyst-like formation: A deeper lump may develop. Some lesions are acne nodules, while others are actual cysts.
