About:
Bitcoin Famba is a grassroots, nonprofit Bitcoin community in the Maputo–Matola area. “Famba” means “to walk” in Changana, and the group treats financial autonomy the same way: a step-by-step journey that starts with knowledge, language, and local use.
Bitcoin education sessions are held in Portuguese so youth, merchants, educators, and activists can learn self-custody, Lightning payments, and everyday Bitcoin use without an English language barrier.
Key objectives:
1. Host regular Portuguese meet-ups and workshops on Bitcoin basics, wallets, self-custody, and Lightning payments for youth, merchants, and activists.
2. Onboard local merchants, vendors, and service providers so people can earn, spend, and save in sats and keep value circulating locally.
3. Reach young people through partnerships such as Maputo Skate & Education, pairing skate culture with financial literacy and hands-on Bitcoin use.
4. Translate and distribute core resources (Trezor Academy, Bitcoin for Fairness, Blink, and related freedom-tech material) so learning happens in Portuguese.
5. Extend the model beyond Maputo, into rural areas and other Lusophone communities, while sharing tools on privacy, censorship resistance, and community custody.

About:
Lwandi Bitcoin is building a Bitcoin circular economy rooted in the long-running social project Lwandi Surf.
The Bitcoin initiative extends this work into the local economy. Surf instructors already earn some of their income in Bitcoin. Local merchant are starting to accept Lightning payments.
Tourists and locals can spend sats directly, so more economic value stays circulating inside the community instead of leaving through banks, card fees, or cash exchanges across the border.
Key Objectives:
1. Youth education & opportunity — Use surfing and related programs to teach financial literacy, discipline, and life skills while introducing Bitcoin as a practical tool for saving and earning.
2. Merchant adoption — Onboard more local businesses (shops, bars, services, tourism operators) so residents and visitors can spend Bitcoin in everyday transactions.
3. Circular economy — Keep more of the money generated by tourism and local activity circulating inside Ponta do Ouro rather than leaking out through traditional finance.
4. Practical Bitcoin use — Demonstrate real Lightning Network payments for goods and services, from cold drinks and haircuts to sauces and crafts, so Bitcoin feels useful rather than abstract.
5. Community & sustainability — Strengthen local resilience, create pathways for young people, and connect financial sovereignty with the beach lifestyle and environmental connection that already define the area.

📉 Growth is not always upwards!
Africa’s Bitcoin ecosystem now has 180 verified projects across 23 countries. That is down from 189 projects in Q3, a 4.8% decrease after our latest directory review.
But a smaller number does not necessarily mean less growth.🚨
As part of our regular review, 11 projects were removed because they were no longer active, no longer met our Bitcoin-only criteria, or had unresolved technical issues.
At the same time, 2 new verified projects were vetted and added, bringing the total to 180 projects.
The goal is not simply to keep adding projects to the map, it is to maintain an accurate, up-to-date directory of active Bitcoin-only initiatives across Africa.
If your project is already listed, claim it and keep your information up to date.
If you’re building Bitcoin in Africa and are not on the map yet, submit your project for review.
