The Lyon College Caring Campuses initiative, in partnership with the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, was selected by the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas to be featured in its 25th anniversary celebration, spotlighting 25 stories of Arkansans whose lives have been impacted by Foundation-funded work.
One of those stories is Marcus Swift, a Lyon senior from Waxahachie, Texas, whose experience with Caring Campuses helped him connect with valuable resources and support.
Today, Marcus is preparing to graduate with a degree in biology and a pre-pharmacy concentration, with double minors in chemistry and animal behavior. He hopes to pursue a career in global health research focused on infectious diseases.
We’re especially grateful to Marcus for sharing his story and for helping other students find the support they need.
“The Caring Campuses program helped me realize that asking for help is okay and that support is available when I need it.”
We’re grateful to the Blue & You Foundation for helping Lyon create a campus where students can find support, recharge and thrive.

It starts with Matriculation.
For our newest first-year and transfer students, the first few weeks at Lyon College are filled with time-honored traditions that welcome them into the community and introduce them to the Scottish heritage Lyon wears proudly.
On Monday, incoming students lined up outside Brown Chapel and followed the Lyon Pipe Band, with bagpipes and drums leading the way, through a cheering gauntlet of faculty and staff and into the chapel.
Then came an important Lyon tradition: students signing the Roll of Honor, making a commitment to the values and community they are now part of.
And it’s not just our newest students making a commitment. New faculty and staff also signed the Honor Pledge, joining a community built on shared values and traditions.
The tartan, the pipes, the drums, the regalia, the Roll of Honor. It’s all part of becoming a Scot.
While the Lyon Pipe Band is a little more than 45 years old, Lyon’s Scottish traditions go back much further. Students played bagpipes on campus in the 1930s and ’40s, and organizations such as the Lassies and Lads embraced Scottish traditions. There was even a women’s crossbow team that dressed in Scottish-inspired attire.
Today’s Pipe Band carries that tradition forward in its own crimson and navy tartan, now officially registered in Scotland.
Welcome to the Lyon community, newest Scots. Your traditions are just beginning.

What can 500-year-old pottery, ancient houses and a 5 a.m. start time teach you?
Lyon College archaeology students spent a month uncovering the past at one of Arkansas’s most significant archaeological sites, discovering pottery, stone tools, animal bones and the remains of a Native American house dating to the 1500s.
The hands-on field school gave students real-world experience while helping researchers better understand the history of the White River Valley. Along the way, they built skills, friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
Sometimes the greatest discoveries aren’t just buried in the ground. They’re found in the students learning how to uncover them.
