This is what community looks like. Yesterday was a day of local and national work-of gathering and rising. We came together-holding space, sharing stories, and confronting the realities of gender-based violence and the barriers Muslim women face. Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, and held this space with such care. Yesterday-our counsel intervened at the Supreme Court in the challenge to Bill 21, bringing this work to a national stage. Local care. National action. Because Muslim women matter.

Why is this government allowing Israeli companies blacklisted for genocide to acquire Canadian companies - contrary to our own laws and policies? The government's response is what exactly?

Canada's sanctions regime against Russia includes a comprehensive two-way arms embargo. But Canada applies no comparable measures against Israel – even in the midst of an ongoing genocide. To the contrary, Israeli arms manufacturers like Elbit Systems are free to acquire Canadian companies whose technology can be used to entrench Israel's unlawful military occupation of Palestine. This is yet another example of Canada failing to fulfill its obligation "not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory." (ICJ Advisory Opinion, July 19, 2024)
Elbit Systems has completed the acquisition of International Submarine Engineering (ISE), a Canadian company specializing in advanced autonomous underwater and remotely operated systems for the maritime domain. Together, our combined capabilities strengthen a comprehensive maritime portfolio spanning autonomous surface and underwater platforms, mission systems, C2, sensors, communications, and electronic warfare. The addition of ISE is expected to expand capabilities in underwater ISR, Mine Countermeasures (MCM), and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). Read more: tinyurl.com/2va465m4

Horrifying news out of San Diego: anti-Muslim hate is the culprit. Our hearts go out to the families and communities impacted by this hateful act of terrorism on US soil.
Hate has no home in San Diego. We stand completely united with our Muslim neighbors against Islamophobia and this senseless act of violence. My full statement:

Dear community, We wanted to share an important update as the challenge to Quebec’s Bill 21 is now being heard at the Supreme Court of Canada. This case is one of the most consequential constitutional hearings in recent years. At its core, it raises urgent questions about religious freedom, equality, and the limits of government power. Bill 21, Quebec’s secularism law, prohibits certain public sector workers-including teachers, judges, and police officers-from wearing visible religious symbols. The law was passed using the notwithstanding clause, which allows governments to override certain Charter rights. As a result, much of the legal debate before the Court is not only about the law itself, but about whether there are any meaningful limits on the use of the notwithstanding clause-and whether fundamental rights can be set aside in this way. Our intervention, alongside others, reflects what is at stake: the protection of fundamental freedoms and the lived realities of those most impacted-particularly Muslim women and other faith communities whose participation in public life is directly affected. In the video above, our Board Director, Lawyer Aadil Nathani, speaks to why this moment matters. As he notes, it is critical that we do not “close the door” on Muslim women and others seeking to fully participate in public life. This is about more than one law. The Supreme Court’s decision could shape how governments across Canada use (or limit) the notwithstanding clause-and whether rights protections remain meaningful for everyone. We encourage you to watch, stay informed, and continue engaging with this critical issue. In solidarity, Muslim Advisory Council of Canada

Not a single witness was called to testify on the Liberal decision to strip the religious defence out of the criminal code through Bill C-9. This backroom deal was not studied and is opposed by every faith community. Yet Liberals are pushing ahead with this attack on freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

In mid-February, I joined police Chiefs from Canada and the United States, on a visit to Israel where we met police and community leaders in several cities. I spent time with police officers from Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Druze faiths representing a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I also met with Muslim community leaders who shared openly about their concerns and their reasons for working with police. These officers and community leaders operate in an environment that demands extraordinary vigilance - managing crime, counter terrorism, supporting community and crisis response all amid extreme complexity. Police to police we were able to talk about the toll this work takes on the people who do it. We talked about building trust in communities where there is little trust. We were able to get a glimpse of the undertaking required to police in complex environments. I am grateful for what I was able to learn and share with those we visited and among my North American peers. These missions offer a great deal of insight and valuable perspective. I am grateful for the continued leadership and support of the Edmonton Police Commission who have supported me in this. As police we focus on behavior, not beliefs. Where I have felt challenged this week is in the implication that any community group should have the right to direct where we can learn. I stand by my decision to take the trip to Israel and continue to view it as valuable, among multiple learning experiences I will have in this role. I remain focused on my longstanding and ongoing commitment to dialogue, learning and connection across communities and across boundaries.

On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we are reminding governments, media, and institutions that anti-Muslim hate is not an abstract issue, it is a growing global threat affecting the safety, dignity, and rights of millions. Islamophobia fuels discrimination, violence, and exclusion. Confronting it requires more than statements; it requires real accountability and action. We urge leaders to treat Islamophobia with the same seriousness as any other form of racism or hate. Media inquiries welcome. #CombatIslamophobia #Islamophobia @CTVNews @CBCNews @CHCHNews @TRTWorldNow

Thank you @martinezdefence you were just phenomenal at today’s injunction 🙏🏽 we appreciate you
Brief reflections on Premier Ford's attempt to stop Al-Quds Day in Toronto 🇵🇸 At 2:30pm yesterday, Premier Ford announced "I've instructed my Attorney General to pursue an injunction against the Al-Quds Day demonstration planned for Toronto." Our volunteer legal team had less than a day to prepare our position on behalf of the Al-Quds Day Committee, but we set to work. Challenging the injunction application would not have been possible without the dedicated work of lawyers, law students, and activists who joined together to strategize, draft submissions, and assemble the necessary documents. This all had to be done without having Ontario's materials, which we received approximately one hour before the injunction application was set to be heard today. There did not appear to be any legitimate reason for the province's 11th hour strategy. It simply made the entire process unnecessarily complex for everyone involved. In our submissions, we argued that Ontario's application was politically motivated, and that it relied on baseless fearmongering and anti-Palestinian rhetoric in lieu of a meaningful evidentiary record. At para. 16 of its decision, the Court found that: "...there is no evidence in the record that there were criminal charges arising out of last year’s Al Quds rally in Toronto, or at the rallies in any of the prior 30 years. There is no evidence that participants at last year's rally incited hatred or engaged in hate speech. There is no evidence before me of any criminality arising out of this rally in the past, much less evidence that could satisfy me that there is a "strong case" that there will be criminal activity this year." Although it was defeated this time, the Ford government has repeatedly shown that it is prepared to disregard the spirit of the Charter and silence voices it disagrees with - especially where Palestine is concerned. Freedom of expression and assembly prevailed today. Vigilance and community solidarity are required to ensure that it prevails tomorrow.
