Publication day! My first book, Nostalgic Futures: The Reactionary Fantasies of Speculative Fiction Fandoms (@RutgersUPress), is officially out! It grew from a graduate paper on PuppyGate into a book examining how nostalgia connects fan controversies to wider culture wars.

Moving from Nashville to Dayton this week had me thinking a lot about this @flashpointsf gem by Jamie Lackey flashpointsf.com/2023/06/02/…

Something We Can Do Ourselves

Nat placed a box labeled “general kitchen” in front of the thing that Jess really hoped was not a laser.

The book asks how nostalgic attachments can connect anger, melancholy, hatred, joy, shame, and pride. Be those attachments to SF, a supposedly "lost" culture, or both. Along the way, I look at fanzines from the 30s–90s, PuppyGate, The Last Jedi, Mass Effect, and The Last of Us.

This is a really interesting article on Vox Day in SwissInfo. In it, you can find a quote or two from this Kommunikationswissenschaftler. swissinfo.ch/eng/information…

Far-right US blogger reaches hundreds of thousands from Switzerland

US author Vox Day was behind the manosphere concept of “sigma males”. We meet him in a quiet village in canton Fribourg.

SF imagines impossible futures, but recent controversies reveal how some fans resist those futures when they drift from their preferred pasts. Nostalgic Futures explores how fan attachments to SF media relate to the logics of violence/exclusion in reactionary movements.
