ALT HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? MAY 11TH marked the final day of the Title 42 policy. Title 42 prohibited the right to seek asylum at the US-Mexico border, resulting in the displacement of 2.8 million immigrants. Immigrant families (mostly Haitian) are living at the Clarion Hotel in Taunton, MA while they wait for work visas and stable housing. ALT Taunton is a MATERNITY DESERT. In 2018, Taunton's maternity unit closed, and the city is now considered a “maternity desert” — meaning maternity care resources, medical providers, and community-based reproductive health services are scarce. Birthing people lack necessary care alongside basic resources resulting in more cases of high blood pressure, anemia, depression, and gestational diabetes.
ALT WHAT NOW? We need your help. These groups are mobilizing and coordinating a layered response to provide basic resources, health services, and political advocacy. Organizers: Sacred Birthing Village, Birth Equity & Justice Massachusetts (BEJMA), Taunton Migrant Families Coalition, The Center for Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice (CBMHRJ) at Tufts University, BREHA Collective, MOTHER Lab.
