Last night British Columbia's winner-take-all vote elected a majority Conservative government, not voters. FPTP put its thumb on the scale giving one party more seats than it earned by voters and compensated by shortchanging other parties.
Last night British Columbia elected a majority Conservative government for the first time in a century. British Columbians wanted change, and voted for it in a big way. Playing a part in this campaign as Director of Communications has been one of the coolest things i've ever done. An incredible team that had to be put together on the fly, and pulled off a truly remarkable accomplishment. I'm so proud of so many people. The future looks bright for BC.

Turns out electoral systems matter. Eby rejected proportional representation. He could lead BC today as head of a governing coalition. With PR, Germany, a country of 85million, got 82% voter turnout in its snap winter, 2025 election. Voters vote more when their vote counts.
Turns out: 1. Ideas matter 2. Telling a story about your govt matters 3. *Selling* yourself, your govt & your team matters, it’s not somehow beneath you 4. Voters don’t like feeling someone’s trying to pull a fast one on them 5. Relying on MSM to get your msg out = govt death

"Premier Eby rejected proportional representation. He might still lead BC today if BCers cast a vote that counts. There is no partisanship in my comments." words Wab Kinew can not say. He heads a false majority government so he was elected by FPTP, not voters. No wonder he sounds as if politicians don't work for citizens. Proportional representation is not on his agenda even if the majority of Manitobans want it. #mbpoli @WabKinew @mbndp
I asked Premier Kinew if he has concerns about Premier-designate Doerksen's promise to repeal DRIPA in BC: "The election results in BC should concern every elected politician and every consultant out there... what we're doing is not a game." #cdnpoli

He opposes a vote that counts. He heads a false majority government. Wab Kinew can thank FPTP, not voters, for his premiership. @wabkinew

@WabKinew - then do something about it - you and @Gov_NB's Premier Holt should be all over not making it a game...deliver a voting system that yields an equitable legislature That is leading, all else is power projection @FairVoteCanada

Brazil uses proportional representation. In a winner-take-all system, politicians seem to feel they have to apoear to stick to the middle, so Eby-ism is the way.
I know the contexts are different, but Eby-ism failed, while Lula stormed to a comeback win tonight Lessons for the NDP going forward. In my humble view, Avi Lewis' vision for the party is far more Lula than Eby. That's a good thing.

Try to negotiate for a vote that counts so you are no longer beholding. Punishing is the only option in a winner-take-all vote as taking seats in the legislature is out of the question.
Danielle Smith expanding the COVID vaccine in Alberta is a signal. She is basically telling everyone who put her there that she no longer has any respect for them and daring them to do something about it. I suspect Albertans will punish her swiftly.

Governments under a Proportional Representation system do make decisions, while having a parliament that reflects the will of the electorate & leads to more perspectives being considered (in general) than other forms of government. I never claimed that it is possible “to let everyone accept every single decision”, you’re creating a false argument based on a point I never shared (and I’ve never seen any pro-PR person say that) Having governments that reflect a majority of the electorate is not a “dictatorship by majority”, and that’s not an excuse to let a government that only represents a minority of the electorate make decisions over what the majority of the electorate wants. Let’s not talk about the state of our democracy through partisanship. By saying that “right-wing governments can absolutely govern under a proportional representation system”, I was simply sharing a fact from a non-partisan perspective, based on the governments in countries under a PR system, and based on yesterday’s results in BC.

Till today, you still have fantasy on proportional representation. Pls name one country, running well on economy under this system? Government is a body to make decision, not listening everyone. It is impossible to let everyone accept every single decision. If now government need to make a decision that can please everyone, at the end no decision can be made. Modern democracy is the dictatorship by majority, so even majority vote is 50.01%, they still make all call on governance. It is what happened during NDP majority. Let me tell you what happen next, leftists let too many immigrants walking in Canada, and those immigrants are from conservative countires and culture. Leftists got illusion that immigriants must support all leftist value so they must vote NDP, turn out, by the time they get citizenship and they all got a vote, they all vote conservative. 4 years later, more immigrants secure citizenship, this blue wave is going to be deeper and deeper, because the fundamental value of leftists does not sync with immigrants from conservative. Leftists don't populate and reproduce, their value cannot pass along. Meanwhile, people with conservative value actively form families and reproduce, our value pass to the next generation and next generation.

With proportional representation, turnout in the 2025 German, winter election reached 82%. Casting a vote that counts brings people to the polls.
Updated. Turnout still below 50%. @Conservative_BC down about 49,000 over 2024, @NDP support plunged 274,000 and @BCGreens are up close to 24,000. Still approx 75,000 mail-in ballots, etc to be counted so that will inch up a bit.

Dang if this two-headed snake, the two-party tyranny of first-past-the-post, doesn't result in bringing separatists into the governing party's electoral coalition. So much damage done. With proportional representation, separatists would elect their own MLAs and be condoned off from a governing coalition. See the BQ.
Smith said she did not win the UCP leadership in 2022 because of support from separatists. The separatists disagree.
11
The problem is our winner-take-all vote demands just two parties. Separatist parties split the vote. So voters get crushed with messages like you elect the NDP when you split the vote. Vote for the NDP if it will enact a fairvote. Albertans need more than two parties to chose from, including independence parties. Two parties, might as well be one party, just like communism. Voters are held hostage by vote splits. Free Albertans to vote their heart. Demand proportional representation from Smith. Threaten to run against her in the gerrymandered districts will split the vote and elect the NDP.
You can tell when Danielle Smith is having a crash out, because she just starts saying ludicrous things. The only reason she won the leadership was because of the Independence movement.

The fact that the BC Conservatives came close to securing a majority of the popular vote demonstrates that right-wing governments can absolutely govern under a proportional representation system. Proportional representation doesn’t prevent conservatives from governing, like some right-wingers like to claim online. It ensures that parliament accurately reflects the will of the electorate & governments reflect a majority of voters through parliamentary democracy. Lorne Doerkson has publicly stated that proportional representation is not off the table and that he is open to hearing from constituents on the issue. I hope he will take meaningful steps toward Proportional Representation as the Premier-elect of British Columbia.
It is a triumph that a Conservative Party dominated a city, including downtown cores, while not capitulating on really any policy. It goes to show that voters are very open to Conservatism. In fact, we are just shy of winning the majority popular vote. Tone, tone, tone!

BC election data shows 52% of voters stayed home. Global data shows all things being equal proportional elections have higher turnout than systems built solely on single-winner-ridings, because proportional representation means everyone feels they have a voice.

The Conservatives got 48% of the vote, without the advanced vote. Little quick math. Oh yes, 51 is bigger than 48 and is a a thin majority. The seat count for Conservatices is just FPTP putting its thumb on the scale. Voter turnout was low too.
There’s nothing quite like winning an election with a few of your best buddies. Even better to watch so many of them get elected for the first time (and for many others the 2nd!).

You're supposed to champion voters who were denied MLAs by FPTP giving unearned seats to Conservatives. You're supposed to champion proportional representation. Eby made the wrong decision on proportional representation.
Today broke grey and raw for New Democrats here in BC: last night was a body blow. This morning I’m sending solidarity and care to all the progressive organizers - within and beyond electoral politics - who have worked tirelessly over so many years in this province. It is thanks to your unending effort that we have won and defended all our social gains: queer and disability rights, Indigenous rights, childcare and public health, working conditions and unionization, universal public services and more. None of these victories came without struggle. And that struggle must continue now, to protect them in every way we can. But not today. Today is a day to feel all the feelings, find comfort and get some rest. Tomorrow we rise to fight again.

NDP abandoned electoral reform to keep Greens at bay. Greed pays off handsomely in the short term. No one can argue NDP would rather hand over power to the most vile version of conservatives than share with Greens. How do you explain that?

The Alberta NDP should campaign on proportional representation for what ails Alberta. Premier Smith could be running an election based upon gerrymandering. Gerrymandering would be forever out of reach with proportional representation. Moreover separatists parties could be elected under their own banner. Better for separatists to be elected to the legislature than to be hiding amongst the UCP.
I’m just an oatmeal socialist girl, standing in front of the Alberta NDP, asking them to campaign on more than “but the conservatives are worse” platform in the next election.

She was a big supporter of proportional representation, so the answer to your question is no. Snap, power-grab elections are a feature of the FPTP creature.
I wonder whether there would have been an election in BC today if Anjali Appadurai had become leader of the NDP instead of Eby.

Eby resigns and accepts responsibility, but the consequences reach far beyond him personally. A better Democracy for the people takes a back seat to power for another political leader who rejected proportional representation. ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article…
