MBZUAI's President, University Professor @ericxing joins The Atlantic’s @nxthompson for a wide-ranging conversation on the AI landscape.
You might think that @ericxing, one of the most prominent advocates of open-source, would support China’s approach to AI, since all of its leading models are open. Instead, he says those models give the illusion of openness, but actually hold their users hostage.
We had a fascinating conversation about the world models he’s building, and his strong views on open-source: youtube.com/watch?v=kuVzFoIl…
Applications are now open for the second cohort of the Ruwwad AI Scholars (RAIS) Fellowship.
The fellowship supports Emirati postdoctoral researchers working at the intersection of AI and other disciplines, helping build pathways toward future faculty careers and strengthen the UAE’s research and teaching capacity in AI.
Our inaugural fellow, Dr. Mohamed Almarei, will undertake a two-year research placement at the @UniofOxford's Department of Engineering Science, applying AI to synthetic biology and the control of living systems. Working with Professor Jean-Baptiste Lugagne, he will use machine learning to better predict and control cellular behavior, bringing together expertise across AI, engineering and biology.

At IROS 2026, researchers from MBZUAI will present work that spans several key areas of robotics, intelligent manipulation, and autonomous systems.
Topics include a soft gripper designed for underwater operation, a new approach for enhancing visuomotor control policies, and a GPU-based framework for robotic perception and planning.
Here is a selection of papers by MBZUAI researchers being presented at this year's International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems.
Here’s everything we’re doing at MICCAI 2026:
• Eric Xing, MBZUAI President and University Professor, will deliver a keynote talk entitled “The Ladder of Intelligence - Toward Reasoning, Planning and Acting Beyond Book Intelligence”.
• Mohammad Yaqub, Associate Professor of Computer Vision at MBZUAI, is serving as General Chair.
• Researchers from the university will also present recent advances in image processing for healthcare.
• Topics include vision foundation models for medical imaging, a multiple instance learning approach for predicting preterm birth with ultrasound images, a new benchmark for evaluating spatial understanding in 3D medical vision-language models, and a graph fusion approach for structural-to-functional MRI synthesis.
Recent trial results for personalized mRNA cancer vaccines represent a historic shift in oncology. But scaling treatments tailored to individual tumors requires massive, 100% reproducible data orchestration.
MBZUAI's Cedric Notredame explains how open-source Nextflow, the open-source workflow language developed in his lab in Barcelona, which incubated its commercial spinoff Seqera, underpins this new era of medicine: mbzuai.ac.ae/news-events/new…
Developing AI models for agriculture requires solutions that deliver real, verifiable value to farmers in the field. What actually takes to make an AI recommendation worth acting on, from initial evidence to real-world verification?
The fifth session of Transforming Agriculture with AI, presented by the Institute for Agriculture and AI (IAAI) in partnership with AGX AI, brings together MBZUAI faculty members serving as principal investigators for IAAI's grantee research projects to examine how data becomes actionable insight.

At ECCV 2026, researchers from MBZUAI will present work that spans several key areas of computer vision and spatial intelligence.
Topics include a unified framework for tool-augmented geospatial reasoning, an approach for video generation that enables realistic rigid-body control and interaction, a method for fine-grained 3D point grounding and spatial reasoning in large multimodal models, an approach for protecting facial biometrics from malicious generative editing, and innovations in wearable AI.
Here is a selection of papers by MBZUAI researchers being presented at this year's European Conference on Computer Vision.
Gregory Chirikjian, Professor of Robotics at MBZUAI, has received the 2026 A.T. Yang Memorial Award in Theoretical Kinematics from the ASME Design Engineering Division, presented at the 50th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference in Houston.
His paper, "A Model for Total Orientation in Three Dimensions," addresses a limitation in the standard mathematical tools used to describe how objects are oriented in 3D space, which record where an object ends up, not how many revolutions it made to get there. A figure skater completing three revolutions and one completing zero can have the same end orientation. The paper introduces a framework that counts the difference — with direct applications in robotics, where multiple revolutions can cause cables to twist and tangle. The same mathematical framework may have implications for how proteins fold and move in computational structural biology — where orientation and revolution also matter but have been equally hard to track.
MBZUAI launches a long-term deep phenotyping study in Abu Dhabi to advance disease prediction and preventive healthcare in the UAE.
The study will explore the genetic, biological, and lifestyle factors that shape health and disease in the UAE population, and support future research.
The country’s diverse population of citizens and residents from over 200 nationalities makes the resulting dataset scientifically valuable, with the potential to inform healthcare policy, clinical care, and drug development.
