Eighty-nine years ago today on October 5, 1937 Mississippi football legend George Sekul was born in Biloxi. Sekul played quarterback for Mississippi Southern, now Southern Miss, during its 9–0 national-championship season in 1958. He later returned to Perkinston and coached Mississippi Gulf Coast to undefeated NJCAA championship seasons in 1971 (11–0) and 1984 (13–0). Across those three championship seasons as a player and coach, Sekul’s teams went a combined 33–0. Sekul won more than 200 games at Gulf Coast, captured eight state championships and became the first Mississippi college football coach to integrate his team in 1967. He was inducted into the Southern Miss, NJCAA, MGCCC and Mississippi sports halls of fame. The playing field at AL May Stadium in Perkinston is named after Sekul, who coached at Perk from 1961-1991 and was head coach from 1966-1991. @MGCCCBulldogs #SouthernMiss #SMTTT #MGCCC #Perkinston
