Continue the #HemingwayinToronto conversation w/ Irene Gammel’s article for @ConversationCA and explore how anonymity, fedoras, and being mocked on the streetcar in Toronto led to Hemingway’s evolution into literary self-fashioning theconversation.com/how-a-fo…
MLCRC Highlight: Why does Hollywood keep turning Hemingway into a whiskey-drinking brawler? This video looks beyond the macho myth to reveal a much more complicated man. Shoutout to 4th-year @TMU_English student Rogene Teodoro for creating/narrating this video!

Before Paris, Hemingway was already learning how to make a story from ordinary life. His March 6, 1920 Star Weekly piece, “Taking a Chance for a Free Shave,” follows customers at a barber college, a.k.a people willing to risk an uncertain haircut to save a little money.
That freedom came partly from J.H. Cranston, the Star Weekly editor overseeing Hemingway’s early Toronto work. Cranston encouraged reporters to pursue unusual feature ideas. The paper rewarded clarity and observation, qualities that would later define Hemingway's prose.
His 1923 return was the opposite. Under Daily Star city editor Harry Hindmarsh, Hemingway felt constrained by routine assignments and quit in January 1924. Toronto gave him creative freedom, then frustration—a tension we’ll explore at Hemingway in Toronto: HemingwayToronto2026.com
Here's how to get to The Hemingway using the TTC! Fun fact: As part of his plan to end his lease, Hemingway threw a party and asked each guest to take something with them when they left. That way, the landlord wouldn't realize that Hemingway was moving out #Hemingway2026
It's nearly here! Join us for the 21st International Hemingway Conference, Hemingway in Toronto.
Enjoy six days of panels and conversation, meet scholars from around the world, and explore the city with fun-filled events all week!
