I'm definitely going to read the book.
After taking a course taught by you, you changed the way I think about privacy, data, and online activity. It's a bit of a dystopian awakening, but a necessary one.
Cheers!

So much of legal scholarship in top law reviews is basically recapitulation of prior work and case law, assembled into an attractive product by talented writers—but no original ideas.

That's exactly it. BCA members and their users all thought they were experiencing isolated, one-off dark patterns that prevented free browser choice on Windows. But together, we've been able to see the bigger design architecture behind these tactics — and understand why they're so important to Microsoft.

We're so glad that lawmakers are waking up and paying closer attention to this critical issue. As you mention, deceptive design is just that — an intentional act to stop users from choosing freely, consenting meaningfully, and exiting markets when dissatisfied.

Yeh. Now tv and the Times are the worst as they make it extraordinarily hard to unsubscribe

I hate dark patterns. Latest one was @LetsReword, a service that I briefly tried and decided it was not for me, just to discover that they had been charging $60 monthly. With all subscription charges nowadays, it's sometimes easy to miss (guilty that I didn't spot this earlier).
