I have arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, to participate in the Extraordinary Meeting of the Bureau of EAC Speakers. I look forward to constructive discussions on strengthening cooperation among the parliaments of East African Community Partner States, deepening our working relations and advancing shared regional priorities.

A free and independent media is a vital bridge between the House of the People and the Somali public. Met with leaders of privately owned media outlets to strengthen cooperation grounded in mutual understanding, transparency and respect for press freedom. We discussed improving access to reliable information, safeguarding media independence, countering misinformation and raising public awareness in service of our country and its people. I firmly believe that independent journalism, rigorous scrutiny and constructive criticism strengthen accountability and contribute to Somalia’s progress. I encouraged media leaders to uphold professional standards and help counter disinformation and extremist propaganda that threaten our shared security and statehood. Our commitment to working with the media must go hand in hand with protecting its freedom to inform, question and hold public institutions accountable.

At this crucial session, I chaired the first joint sitting of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, which considered the first reading of the Government’s financial statements for the 2025 fiscal year. This review is central to Parliament’s responsibility to oversee public finances, scrutinise revenue and expenditure, and ensure compliance with financial regulations. It also reinforces our commitment to ensuring that national resources are managed with transparency, integrity and accountability. To advance the digitalisation of the House of the People and improve its operations, we have agreed to a 15-day recess, allowing technical teams to complete the essential upgrades required to support the House’s work.

I extend my sincere appreciation to Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, for his warm congratulatory message on my election as Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. I deeply value the friendship and parliamentary cooperation between Somalia and the United Kingdom.

In fulfilment of its constitutional mandate, the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia approved the Digitalization Bill and agreements between Somalia and Türkiye on international judicial cooperation. The House also began the first reading of the African Youth Charter as part of its legislative proceedings.

Today, I had the pleasure of welcoming the new EU Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. László Máthé, to my office. Our discussions focused on strengthening Somalia–EU relations, particularly parliamentary cooperation, institutional capacity-building, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise. I expressed my appreciation for the EU’s continued support for Somalia’s security and state-building efforts and reaffirmed our shared commitment to deepening this important partnership.
