Our paper indicates that research on AI for paediatric pneumonia diagnosis remains hospital-centric, insufficiently externally validated and non-LMIC contexts. It argues for primary-care-oriented, transparent, and cost-effectiveness-driven research agenda

UTGSU: A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY
Esteemed Students,
On 23rd October 2026, the Union, through its Information and Communication Ministry, called for a protest over the persistent challenges facing students at the University of The Gambia (UTG), Faraba Campus: a transportation crisis, a shortage of sufficient, quality food, drinkable water and the absence of internet connectivity.
These problems have persisted since our relocation to Faraba, resurfacing in new forms time and again. They have now spiralled out of control and placed the entire student body in a chokehold. Students are missing classes, tests and other critical academic commitments. The transportation crisis is the direct result of an insufficient supply of buses by the authorities tasked with this responsibility: the Gambia Transport Service Company (CTSC), the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MOHERST) and the UTG Management.
Equally disturbing, almost two months into the semester, the food crisis on campus remains unresolved. If anything, it has worsened. Students are
sometimes forced to go from morning to evening on empty stomachs.
The Union understands, without a shred of doubt, that these challenges are entirely avoidable. They persist because of sheer indifference to the needs of students!
In keeping with Section 7(4) of UTGSU Constitution 2021 (as amended), the Union has consistently engaged the authorities to take practical steps to resolve these matters. Almost all of these engagements were treated without regard or as matters that merit no attention at all.
Our duty in this moment is clear. The Preamble to our Constitution requires the Union to take the necessary measures to address any situation that threatens the wellbeing of students. Section 7 further obliges the leadership of the Union to safeguard the welfare of the students.
We derive our mandate from the students, and we pledged to discharge our duties without fear or favor. We cannot sit still in the face of such rot and do nothing. Where engagement fails to deliver the necessary results demanded by the circumstances, other necessary and lawful means must be pursued. That is what this protest is about
We will gather peacefully, register our frustration and dissatisfaction ano submit a petition outlining the position of the Union on all these matters.
As announced in the communication from the Union's Information and Communication Ministry, the protest is scheduled as follows:
Date: Monday, 26th october 202t
Time: 9:00 AM
Venue: Peace Building, Kanifing Campus
This statement is a call for solidarity addressed to every student of UTG. Our motto is "dedication, service and solidarity", and solidarity is what we ask of you today. This is a struggle for our dignity, and it is a collective one. It can only be won together.
We may come from different schools, but the challenges we face are the same. Section 7(5) calls on students to speak with one voice on major issues of concern.
That moment has come.
Thus, the 24th Executive Council calls on every student of UTG to rally behind this historic call, take a collective stand against disrespect, and bring an end to these avoidable challenges. Silence has only deepened them. Unity of purpose will end them!
Forward then!

24 October 2026
The Government of The Gambia today held a high-level engagement of key stakeholders to consider concerns raised by University of The Gambia students regarding catering services, water supply, internet connectivity, and transportation challenges.
The Government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that students have access to a safe, conducive, and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence and student welfare.
Following extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, a number of immediate interventions have been agreed.
Catering Services
Catering services will be restored on campus immediately. As an interim measure, the previous caterers or alternative service providers will deliver catering services effective Monday, 26 October 2026. In the meantime, the University will continue the procurement process of engaging long-term service providers to avoid any further disruption.
Water Supply
As an immediate intervention, the University will furnish additional water dispensers across campus to enhance access to potable water.
The Government has further directed the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) and the University Management to work closely together. They will identify and implement sustainable technical solutions to strengthen water supply infrastructure and improve service reliability.
Internet Connectivity
Recognising the importance of reliable internet access to teaching, learning, research, and innovation, the University will immediately engage telecommunications providers to improve connectivity across campus.
The University will also maximise utilisation of the Gambia Research and Education Network (GAMREN) to provide both internet connectivity and access to global educational and research resources.
Student Transportation
The Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) will immediately deploy the full fleet of 20 buses effective Monday, 26 October 2026, to alleviate the transportation challenges. The Government of The Gambia will continue discussions with stakeholders to review existing transportation arrangements and support sustainable solutions that adequately respond to student mobility needs.
Government Commitment

For weeks, some racist Western media outlets published story after story against Professor Jason Arday, at times every few hours, branding him a plagiarist. They hounded him relentlessly, and the pressure became too much for him. He committed suicide in August, aged just 41.
This week, he was cleared of plagiarism yet again. A fresh investigation by the academic publisher Taylor & Francis found nothing to support the allegations. Of the four formal investigations into his work, not one substantiated the charge.
The same publications that hunted him are now silent. They have not corrected their reporting, and they have not had the decency to admit they were wrong.
This is how hard it is to be Black in a deeply racist world, and to succeed where they expect you to fail. Even those who present themselves as the moral conscience of the Western world have nothing to say.
In a shameful act, the Oxford Reform Society has invited Nathan Cofnas, the self-described "race realist" who first raised the plagiarism allegations against Professor Arday, to speak at Oriel College next month. Oriel College, the home of Cecil John Rhodes’ statue.
These institutions are racist. Sadly, Black leaders have failed to build rival institutions that give Black people respect and intellectual dignity.
We are forced to endure disrespect because our leadership has failed us completely. Black billionaires line up to hand money to these institutions in exchange for meaningless honorary titles, instead of building our own.
May Professor Arday's soul rest in peace. You were hounded to your death by publications that today do not even have the shame to admit they were wrong.

Speaking in Mandinka, and other languages he warned against political manipulation and urged Christians to respect laws and the president while affirming that criticism is lawful, but insults are sinful.

WHO Special Envoy José Luis Castro: Chronic Lung Diseases 🫁 Affect Around Half a Billion People, Yet Continue to Be Overlooked
Chronic lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease #COPD and asthma, affect half a billion people worldwide, and COPD is the third leading cause of death. Nevertheless, these conditions receive less attention in national health policies than cardiovascular diseases and cancer, @JLCastroGarcia of the @WHO told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).
Since 1 September 2024, Castro has served as the WHO Director-General’s Special Envoy for Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs).
On 25 September this year, José Luis Castro visited Poland to participate in a conference held at the Polish Parliament (Sejm) entitled “The Lungs of Poles: Challenges and Priorities for Public Health,” organized as part of the observance of #WorldLungDay.
“People generally associate #lung diseases with infectious causes, such as tuberculosis. These diseases do indeed affect millions of people worldwide. But there are also chronic lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, which affect half a billion people and cause four million deaths annually. Despite this, public awareness of these conditions remains significantly lower,” Castro told PAP.
The expert recalled that chronic obstructive #pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered the third leading cause of death worldwide. Yet it is rarely the subject of media coverage. According to the International #Respiratory Coalition, citing data from the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study, more than 38 million people in the European region live with COPD.
“When I took up my position at WHO in 2024, I reviewed articles and media reports about chronic lung diseases (...) and found one article published in The New York Times that mentioned COPD as the cause of death of Sinéad O’Connor [the Irish singer-songwriter],” Castro recalled. He emphasized that the disease had received coverage only because it affected a celebrity.
In his view, one of the problems surrounding COPD is that it continues to be mistakenly perceived as a disease affecting only older people and smokers, contributing to the stigmatization of patients.
“COPD does not affect only older people or smokers. It also affects people who have never smoked, and the factors that predispose someone to develop the disease may arise very early in life. Air pollution, exposure to harmful substances in the workplace, and factors affecting lung development all contribute to the disease,” the specialist explained.
He emphasized that everyone living with COPD deserves a timely diagnosis, effective #treatment, and care free from stigma.

A new @WHO report reveals that noncommunicable #NCDs diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, along with their risk factors, disproportionately impact the poorest and most disadvantaged populations within countries.
This first comprehensive global assessment highlights that people with lower education and income often face higher risks from #tobacco, alcohol, and #airpollution, and frequently receive worse care, such as lower cancer screening rates and less access to hypertension treatment in rural areas.
To close these unjust gaps, countries must prioritize equity-oriented policies, strengthen primary #health systems, and invest in collecting better disaggregated data to ensure that life-saving interventions actually reach the populations most in need.
