Remembering Deputy Brian Etheridge End of Watch: September 28, 2009 Seventeen years ago today, Deputy Brian Etheridge of the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office was killed in the line of duty. Brian was a young deputy just beginning his career when he responded to what appeared to be a routine theft report. He was ambushed by the person he had gone to help. Brian’s actions that day likely saved the lives of fellow officers. His death left a lasting loss for his family, his agency, and the Wichita community of Sedgwick County. Brian’s story has many unexpected turns, but it does not end with his death. His wife, Sarah, continues to mentor and give back to the law enforcement family that has stood beside her for nearly two decades. Through her compassion and service, she continues to honor Brian and helps ensure his sacrifice is never forgotten. Today, we remember Brian’s courage and sacrifice. While his life was tragically cut short that day, our responsibility to honor him and keep his memory alive will never end. Deputy Brian Etheridge will never be forgotten. THE ARIK MATSON STORY—ONLINE NOW SHOT IN THE LINE OF DUTY—NO CALL IS ROUTINE We have spent the past several weeks working on the Arik Matson Story—interviewing officers and family members and reviewing more than 1,000 documents from the case file. Waseca Police Officer Arik Matson’s story began on a quiet Monday night in January 2020 in Waseca, Minnesota, with the kind of suspicious-person call officers respond to hundreds of times throughout their careers. Within moments, a gunfight erupted. The gunman was shot, and Officer Matson was shot in the head—forever changing the lives of Arik, his family, his fellow officers and the entire community. In this special survivor story, Arik, the three officers who were with him that night, his mother and his brother help tell the story of the shooting, his fight to survive and the long road through recovery. It is also a story about fatherhood, resilience and Arik’s determination to remain present in the lives of his two daughters. Arik has no memory of that night—which, honestly, may be a blessing. With the help of the three officers who were there, this episode walks listeners step by step through the incident in remarkable detail, including actual radio traffic, 911 calls and more. Then, Arik, his fellow officers and his family share a glimpse into his recovery journey and where he is today. Arik’s Survivor Page is also online, featuring photographs and videos from throughout his life, law-enforcement career, recovery and continued journey: officerdownmemorialpodcast.c… Please take a few minutes to visit Arik’s Survivor Page, listen to his story and learn about his incredible fight to survive and recover after being shot in the head. If you listen through Apple Podcasts, please consider rating and reviewing the podcast. Doing so helps us share these important stories with more listeners and supporters. We also want to recognize Law Enforcement Labor Services, Inc. for the assistance it provided to the Matson family during this difficult time and for sponsoring these important stories of Minnesota heroes. Although Arik’s law-enforcement service has ended, our duty to remember his service and sacrifice has not. Thank you for listening and for helping us honor the service, sacrifice and survival of those who protect our communities. THE ARIK MATSON SURVIVOR STORY January 6th, 2020 It was a sleepy Monday night in Waseca, Minnesota, when Officer Arik Matson and his fellow officers responded to a suspicious-person call—the kind of call most cops take hundreds of times throughout their career. Nothing about it suggested how profoundly that night would change their lives. On January 6, 2020, Arik was shot in the line of duty, a painful reminder that no call is ever truly routine for law enforcement. Arik survived, but survival was only the beginning. The injury changed nearly every part of his life, and the road through treatment and rehabilitation demanded more than most of us can imagine. Through it all, his love for his two daughters and his determination to remain present in their lives as their dad gave him a reason to keep pushing forward. In this episode, Arik, the three fellow officers who were there that night, his mom, and his brother help tell his story. The photos and videos on Arik’s story page offer another glimpse of the officer, father, family, and community behind it. We hope you’ll spend a few minutes looking through them, then listen to The Arik Matson Story, a special edition of the Officer Down Memorial Podcast available Wednesday morning. officerdownmemorialpodcast.c… Thank you to our friends and partners at Law Enforcement Labor Services, Inc. For sponsoring this amazing story. #MatsonStrong #survivor #backtheblue #Hero #ThinBlueLineSupport
