This is the last thing I’m going to say on the subject….🩸 This conversation isn’t about America vs. Brazil. Regardless of what happens in Brazil, racism exists worldwide, including Brazil we have seen and hear the horror stories about how black/dark skin Brazilians are treated vs white Brazilians. That’s common information you can google, so I won’t even get into that history because that’s not the point. The point is this creator exists in a global online space. Something her community and supporters seems to not comprehend. They’re creating content for people from all over the world, not just a local Brazilian audience. When you choose to build an international platform, you also choose to engage with people from different cultures and lived experiences. So the “she’s from Brazil” excuse doesn’t really work here. If this was something that was offensive let’s say in Japan, or by the Japanese, this model would have been scrapped or perhaps never even made. It’s the audacity to think that black people wouldn’t call this out that’s frying me. Her choices were hurtful. Her responses were tone deaf. And quite frankly, parts of her community haven’t handled this any better.
