One thing Kubrick was fantastic at, which made him so phenomenal and record-breaking, was his ability to make movies that could incite anger, hatred, and scorn toward the characters in them. Such as the cultists in Eyes Wide Shut, the entire platoon in Full Metal Jacket for driving Pyle to suicide, Barry from Barry Lyndon, and, unsurprisingly, Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange. All are portrayed phenomenally by Kubrick to be scorned, loathed, and despised vehemently. The first time I ever saw this movie, I was so infuriated and angered by Alex and his droogs for their abhorrent behavior. It brought a poetic sense of vengeful justice to see Alex suffer the reaping of what he sowed: chaos and suffering. And to see Alex be mercilessly tormented, and the victims of his crimes exact justice and vengeance on him, made me feel not an ounce of pity for Alex. Since then, I’ve seen Kubrick as, in so many ways, better than Lucas or Spielberg, because Kubrick never sugarcoated anything. His films were raw and brutal and could easily incite many emotions, and that alone makes Kubrick a cinema legend. But that’s the best thing about villains in film: if you hate the villain, the actor portraying them has played their role perfectly. Kubrick, to me, is far better than Lucas, Spielberg, and, in a few ways, Cameron as well. Kubrick is one of my favorite movie directors.
