The whereabouts of Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah remain unknown, over three hours after Mada Masr paid the court-ordered fine at the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court this afternoon. Attalah was taken into the custody of security officers from the court immediately after the court issued a ruling convicting her of running a website without a license. The ruling came with a penalty fine of LE3 million and orders for the closure of Mada Masr’s website. Her defense counsel were present in the courtroom but were not informed of where she was being taken. Mada Masr paid the fine in full in the ensuing hours.

1/ No amount of outrage can capture the enormity of what happened in Egypt today. In a rushed, politically motivated case, a judge ordered the closure of @MadaMasr, one of the country’s few remaining independent media outlets.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was fined LE3 million by the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, which convicted her on charges of managing an unlicensed website, issuing an order for the website’s closure. Attalah was taken into custody after the issue of the ruling. Tuesday’s session at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak, was temporarily suspended for deliberations after Attalah’s defense counsel requested time to review the case file. After the court returned from deliberations, the judge ordered the courtroom cleared of everyone except Attalah and her defense counsel, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights’ executive director Hossam Bahgat, who was also present, told Mada Masr. The room then filled with plainclothes officers and guards, with a National Security Agency officer in attendance, he added. The presiding judge and a Supreme State Security Prosecution representative returned to the session and the judge announced that the court has decided to stand by its rejection of all the procedural arguments presented by the defense, including requests to bring in any documentation or hear any witnesses. The judge then asked the defense team to present its plea. The counsel insisted that it would not submit a plea as long as its requests were unanswered by the court. The judge then abruptly asked for a lawyer unknown to any member of the defense counsel to be brought in, “in a move that astonished all those present,” said Bahgat, and announced that the court decided to appoint a lawyer for Attalah. At that point, all members of the defense counsel cried out to reject the court’s appointment of a lawyer when the eight chosen lawyers were present. Attalah herself spoke to say she did not accept the court-appointed lawyer acting on her behalf, an objection the judge refused to have recorded in the session’s minutes. "In an even more shocking move,” said Bahgat, the judge himself began to log down the requests of the court-appointed lawyer, without the lawyer having said a word. The judge then read out the conviction amid shouts and protests from the defense counsel. The judge sentenced Attalah to the maximum possible penalty: a LE3 million fine, the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its property. Security personnel then surrounded Attalah, lifted her off the ground and took her out of the courtroom, where she remains in custody in the courthouse.

All indications are that U.S. is heading back to war. The next round could be larger and more devastating for Iran but also for the Middle East. It may not be the end of the conflict but the start of a broader unraveling for the region with lasting consequences for the global economy as well. Washington and Israel want to knock out Iran with bigger blows but likelihood of that is low. There will be a lot of devastation before there is an end in sight
Iran says it is preparing to unveil a weapon called the “father of all bombs”, amid reports Trump has ordered plans for strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure using the “mother of all bombs”, the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. LIVE updates: aje.news/r3rtel

1/2 To me, this is the biggest story out of Egypt today. @Linaattalah has pioneered independent journalism since well before Jan. 25, 2011. @MadaMasr remains one of its few surviving spaces. This chilling attack should give everyone pause.
🟠The Supreme State Security Prosecution referred Mada Masr editor-in-chief Lina Attalah today to trial on charges of establishing, managing and operating a website without a license. Her trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 27. 🟠The case, registered as Case No. 11743/2026, Fifth Settlement Misdemeanors, and No. 9072/2026, Supreme State Security, will be heard at the New Cairo Court in the Fifth Settlement. The prosecution accused Attalah of violating Law No. 180/2018 regulating the press, media and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation. 🟠Attalah received the referral order less than 24 hours after her release on LE100,000 bail, following more than six hours of questioning by the Supreme State Security Prosecution. During the interrogation, prosecutors accused her of running an unlicensed website and publishing false news domestically and abroad. 🟠According to Mada Masr, the questioning concerned its reporting on a wave of prison protests following the postponement of the new Criminal Procedure Code’s implementation. Prosecutors also asked about the outlet’s work and its efforts to obtain a license. Find out all the details via the following link: tinyurl.com/4jerka2t #مدى_مصر #لينا_عطالله @madamasr

Is Egypt’s Sisi really stepping down in 2030? Or is this just another ruse? Either way, the fine print in Sisi’s statements suggests even greater military control of Egypt’s elections and political life. journalofdemocracy.org/onlin…

“Young Israeli shepherds…who come for a sense of adventure.” What an absolutely insane way to describe terrorism and occupation.
In the West Bank, some of the violence against Palestinians is being carried out by young Israeli shepherds known as Hilltop Youth, who come for a sense of adventure and are told they’re on a God-given mission to redeem the land. cbsn.ws/4yLzzCv

He’s right, the world isn’t stopping them. The UK is busy condemning the Green Party and the US is busy condemning a Twitch streamer. Meanwhile, Israel does ethnic cleansing and war crimes out in the open; *brags* about it in fact:
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich: The thorough cleansing that we are carrying out now in southern Lebanon is unprecedented. They have nowhere to return to. Look at how it looks. And by the way, the world isn’t stopping us.

CHART OF THE DAY: The cost of hiring a supertanker to ship oil from the Persian Gulf to the Far East has climbed further, reaching ~$1.3 million per day. (It was less than $50,000 a day before the war started; and ~$1.1 million when I first published the chart in September)

Yes, more oil is flowing through the Strait. And here’s why Iran may want it that way Michelle Brohard, head of policy and geopolitical risk at Kpler, speculated in a recent interview with energy analyst Rory Johnston (@commoditycontext) that the reason why more crude is getting through the Strait of Hormuz may be because some countries are paying Iran a toll, possibly up to 20% of the value of each cargo. I cannot verify whether this is true or not, but I have heard directly from the Iranian side that certain countries in the GCC have struck deals with Iran to allow their oil to get out, and that this is the main reason why more traffic is flowing rather than the Trump administration’s military efforts. “Whatever flows through the Strait, it’s because we are allowing it to flow,” I have been told. One can dismiss the Iranian account as a desperate effort to claim control over a situation that, on the surface, is moving against Iranian interests. But there may also be a logic that explains why Iran would not only allow more oil to flow, but also a narrative in the West that claims Tehran has lost the battle over the Strait. There are currently 134.8 million households in the US. Just ~1.4 million of these households, or 1%, now control a record 32.5% of US household wealth. Never in US history has there been a wealth divide even remotely close to what we are seeing now.
The middle class is gone. According to Fed data, the top 1% of Americans now control ONE-THIRD of all US net worth. Since 2020, the top 1% have gained +$30 TRILLION in net worth, while the bottom 50% are worth just $4.3 trillion. What is happening? Let us explain. (a thread)

Israel wiped Gaza from the face of the earth. Everyone knew exactly what they were doing! A crime more confessed to as it happened than any other in history. A crime more documented as it happened than any other in history. There are no excuses. None at all,
Google Earth updated the images of Gaza. It's devastating.
