When did we move from overusing the word "literally" to supercharged turbo drive usage of the word "specifically?"
Nothing about this is shady at all 😕🙄
Flávio Bolsonaro Rushes Out of Miami Customs Under Umbrella Shield After Defying Court to Flee Brazil.
MIAMI — Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and his family cleared U.S. Customs at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning and were quickly rushed away, with agents holding umbrellas to shield them from view.
The senator, son of jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro, arrived on a private Gulfstream G400 (registration LV-JQW) after crossing into Argentina late Tuesday via the Tancredo Neves Bridge with his wife Fernanda and daughters Carolina and Luiza. The jet made a brief stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador, before landing near Miami around 9:20–10:25 a.m. local time.
Bolsonaro defied a Supreme Court order from Justice Alexandre de Moraes to surrender his passports and remain in Brazil amid corruption and money-laundering probes. Brazilian authorities had canceled his documents. The Trump administration confirmed it is issuing visas for the family; Trump told reporters he approved their entry, calling them “fine people” and criticizing the election result.
The rapid, low-profile exit from the executive airport underscores the sensitivity of the arrival, which deepens tensions between Brasília and Washington after Bolsonaro’s narrow loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Halloween Candy is up 15% from last year. A 100 piece bag of candy is 71% more expensive than it was 5 years ago and most chocolate companies have been moving towards lab grown ingredients. The product is getting worse AND more expensive. Happy Halloween, everyone.

According to the book, Kushner got Tillerson fired for a $50 million UAE payment because Tillerson supported Qatar. This panicked Qatar because they realized Kushner was a pay-to-play operative, so they bought Kushner's New York City apartments, which were in the red, hoping this would help.

Just a casual reminder that Germans who “didn’t bother to vote” in 1932 didn’t get a chance again until 1946, after Hitler’s death. — There’s a lesson there.

For Halloween, I think you should get a cape. Not a cheap plastic one from Spirit Halloween, but a bespoke handmade one from Casa Seseña. When you put it on, shift your shoulders back and forth and then sweep the front edge across your shoulders, swatting anyone in close vicinity

I started a podcast with @trufelman, where we read canonical philosophical and sociological texts, and then discuss how those ideas illuminate our understanding of dress. The idea is that listeners can treat this like a book club and read along.

I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I think it should be a bigger story that the eldest son of the President of the United States is vacationing with corrupt Russian oligarchs.
Wow. Financial Times reports that Trump Jr. went on a Mongolian hunting trip with the Russian businessman who financed his wedding party. The trip was in August, three months after the wedding. ft.com/content/f41fc704-c9e6…

When George Washington was inaugurated in 1789, he wore a relatively plain brown frock coat. To the modern eye, the garment may look fancy, but it was relatively constrained for a man of Washington's position.
Affluent Americans at the time tended to wear European fabrics, as centuries of textile tradition on that side of the Atlantic meant that their materials were finer, silkier, and more luxurious. Those who could afford to wear such materials often did, not just because they were more comfortable, but because they signaled status.
Washington rejected this convention for his inauguration, opting instead for a plain brown frock coat made from an American-made material, specifically one produced by a relatively new upstart in Connecticut. It's also notable that his outfit for that day was considerably more restrained than those of leaders in other Western nations.
For instance, check out this outfit on George III (slide one). In this 1762 coronation painting, we can see the British monarch wearing a gold damask coat with a velvet mantle lined and edged with ermine and trimmed in gold. Even his shoes featured solid gold buckles.
Washington opted for something simpler because he wanted to send two political messages. First, he wanted to support domestic industry (hence his request that the garment be made from American woolen broadcloth).
Second, he understood that the US was supposed to be a democratic republic, not a monarchy. Back in Europe, monarchs wore fancy ceremonial attire to reinforce their position in society. Washington, by contrast, chose something more restrained, signaling that he was not governing through divine right but rather through consent of the people.
Irish-born architect James Holban also understood this when he designed the White House in the Neoclassical style, drawing from Georgian and Palladian architecture. Neoclassicism was a rejection of Rococo, which had been fashionable among European monarchs and aristocrats in the preceding decades.
Most people will know Rococo from the photos of the lavish French palaces erected during the reign of Louis XV. Much like the elaborate ceremonial attire of European monarchs, these interiors were meant to impress upon people the wealth and power of European leaders. The visual grandeur reinforced the idea that these people fundamentally occupied a different social station from those they governed.
To be sure, the White House was much nicer than what ordinary Americans at the time would have occupied. But much like Washington's inauguration outfit, Hoban's design was meant to balance the dignity of the office with the republican ideal that political authority ultimately comes from the people. Our leaders are not above us; they are here to serve us.
That is why the White House was decorated in this relatively restrained way for almost 250 years, changing only recently. I have seen some on here suggest that glorifying the White House is meant to glorify the state, and thus the citizens. But this logic was historically used by dictators abroad, not US presidents.
