The Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Award staff is waiting for you - yes, you - to send in your story!
Since its early days, science fiction has played a unique role in human civilization. It removes the limits of what "is" and shows us a boundless vista of what "might be." Its fearless heroes, spectacular technologies and wondrous futures have inspired many people to make science, technology and space flight a real part of their lives and in doing so, have often transformed these fictions into reality. The National Space Society and Baen Books applaud the role that science fiction plays in advancing real science and have teamed up to sponsor this short fiction contest in memory of Jim Baen.
Contest opens for submissions on October 15, 2026 at 12:01am EDT. (Entries sent before that date will be deleted unread. Any AI-generated stories will be automatically disqualified.)
Deadline - 12:01am, U.S. Pacific Time, February 1, 2027.
The ten finalists will be announced no later than March 8, 2027.

Today begins our countdown towards the release of the Chaos and Consequences anthology! And our first story in the anthology is a fantastic piece by author @melissaolthoff!
Bio: Melissa writes science fiction and fantasy adventure romance with plenty of banter and heart. She is a lifelong geek as well as a veteran of the United States Air Force, both of which are incredibly useful when writing. Her degrees in meteorology and accounting are slightly less applicable to writing, but absolutely useful when it comes to supporting her family.
She has written in both shared worlds and her own universes, and through the power of caffeine and friendship, manages to juggle chaos on and off the page. Published by Baen Books, she is best known for her Griffin Corps series and Bronze Legion novels.
Her story, 'More Than Survival,' can be previewed below:
***
The world was ending.
Captain Jace Benning had spent years fighting for his country, but he couldn’t stop the end of the world any more than he could stop the sun from rising.
All he could do was try to survive the shattering.
Jace put one foot in front of the other and swept his gaze across the ragtag band of survivors he’d gathered during his insane trek across the Sonoran Desert. Grim resolve flowed through his exhausted soul. As tired as he was, there was never any question as to whether he would keep going.
Long past the point where the first bombs had fallen on American soil, long past the point where he lost contact with his chain of command. He would keep going, because if he couldn’t save his country, he could save his soldiers. They were his responsibility now, even if they hadn’t started out that way.

We're trying. The work isn't easy, but worth doing.
Raconteur Press: Building More Than a Catalog of Books
Raconteur Press is doing things differently. They create opportunities for writers, help them develop their craft...
That's a cultural contribution worth supporting.

‘Hold My Beer Heroes’ gathers ten comic stories about the overconfident, the underprepared, and the magnificently wrong, and the glorious moment each of them finds out.
Curated by David Badurina, this anthology celebrates the oldest joke in the book: the guy who says “watch this” right before everything catches fire. And then, somehow, wins anyway.

I always love a ‘men don’t read real books’ bit of sneering 😬
Me and my guy @Maloryauthor are cool with this as long as it eventually leads somewhere.

Really sad to see what's happening with @tapas_app . Hopefully creators will get some answers soon!
We create many #webcomics, though not much for Tapas. But we are VERY invested in the webcomic market in the US so it's always a shame to see competition go away.
