On behalf of the British people, I would like to apologise for the slave trade. I am sorry we were the first great power in history to turn its guns on it. I am sorry it cost us around 2,000 sailors to free 150,000 people they would never meet. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow.
Slavery did not begin with Britain. It is as old as civilisation. Babylon wrote it into law. Rome built an empire on it. The Vikings sold Englishmen through the slave market at Dublin. In 1625 Barbary corsairs took 60 men, women and children out of a Cornish church; by 1640 Parliament was told 3,000 to 5,000 English people were held in Algiers alone.
Every great power of the age took part in the Atlantic trade. Portugal and Spain for a century before an English ship did. Then the Dutch, the French — and the British, who in the eighteenth century carried more than anyone. That is the record. It is not disputed here.
Then a nation turned on the trade that had made it rich.
Wilberforce's bill was beaten year after year. On 25 March 1807 it passed. Then Britain did the part the critics never mention — it sent the Royal Navy to enforce it. The West Africa Squadron sailed in 1808, two ships for 3,000 miles of coast, and hunted slavers for nearly sixty years. Britain paid Spain and Portugal to open their ships to search. HMS Black Joke ran down the slaver El Almirante in 1829 and found 466 people in her hold.
Around 2,000 British sailors died doing it — most of fever, to free people they would never meet. 1,600 slave ships seized. 150,000 Africans set free.
In 1833 Parliament borrowed £20 million to end slavery across the Empire. The debt was not finally redeemed until 2015. The United States needed a civil war. Cuba held slaves until 1886. Brazil until 1888 — eighty-one years after Westminster voted.
Yes, we took part in the trade. Every power of the age did. None of them fought it like we did.
So yes. I will apologise. I am sorry it cost us so much. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow.
That is not something you apologise for. That is something you teach.

❤️ My beautiful boy deserves to be remembered with love, not hate. ❤️
Yesterday, a Coventry fan used a photograph of Bradley to taunt Sunderland supporters.
As Bradley’s mam, this is heartbreaking, especially as it’s one of my favourite photographs of him. Just look at that smile.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. He was so happy, having so much fun. Those moments were precious because they were few and far between. So much of Bradley’s short life was spent battling cancer and enduring treatments no child should ever face.
To see such a beautiful memory used in such a cruel way really does make my heart hurt. 💔
We are a football-loving family who follow Sunderland home and away. I’m all for football banter, but surely mocking a child who died from cancer is not banter?
I hope the club takes appropriate action and the young lad’s family help him understand how hurtful his actions were. I don’t want hatred directed towards him, so please please don't, just for him to learn from this.
Behind that photograph is a little boy who was loved beyond measure and a family who miss him every day.
Thank you to everyone who has defended Bradley and shown us so much love. It means more than you know. ❤️
What some people don’t realise is that Bradley’s story didn’t end when his life did.
Because of Bradley, children’s lives are being saved, hundreds of families have received vital support, and children facing unimaginable battles are being given hope.
Through Super Brad’s Pad, families can escape hospital life, spend precious time together and make memories that last forever.
That is Bradley’s legacy. The difference my little boy continues to make in this world. No amount of cruelty will ever take that away.
So rather than let this photograph be remembered for hatred, I want it remembered for what it truly represents.
My beautiful little boy, enjoying one of the happiest days of his life, with the biggest smile on his face. 💙
That is how I want the world to remember him.

I am not calling for NJ's head, but I am calling for NJ to be more ruthless in his team selection. Leaburn has improved in some areas of his game, but he has 20-odd games without scoring; that's not a striker. Kelman (our most expensive player) had more shots at goal in the last 20 mins of the game than the whole team in 90 minutes. Kelman should have been brought on well before the time he was brought on, he is fast, not ashamed to take players on, and not afraid to shoot either. I doubt our owners will accept relegation or paying out 15 to 20 million of losses either.

If you still think that Reform is a serious party, then you are not SERIOUS. A few months ago they said they won’t guarantee the TRIPLE LOCK because the country can’t afford it. Today they are all out saying they will guarantee it. LIARS, they will say anything for votes.

#Reform have just committed electoral suicide.
They are looking at ways to stop the State Pension.
Thousands of their voters depend on it.
They will sell the NHS to the highest bidder and put you on the street.
For God's sake NEVER vote for these evil madmen. #SavePensions

The world is changing, and nations are no longer acting alone but in alliances to advance their mutual economic agendas.
Canada, Australia, New Zealand & the UK must now seize the opportunity to work together, and be a collective force for security and prosperity. 🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿🇬🇧

🚨 SHARE THIS FACE EVERYWHERE: MANHUNT UNDERWAY AFTER THUG BRUTALLY PUNCHES WOMAN ON TRAIN TO COVENTRY!
We need to make sure this coward has nowhere left to hide across Great Britain today.
British Transport Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a woman was repeatedly punched in the chest and face aboard a train approaching Coventry station.
The attacker struck her, walked away, and then returned moments later to push her to the floor and punch her in the face again before following her off the carriage!
While politicians waste time lecturing the public with guidance leaflets on consent, innocent British women cannot even travel on public transport without facing brutal violence. 🤡
Anyone who recognises this individual is urged to contact British Transport Police immediately on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 433.
Women have the fundamental right to travel without fear on our railways. Let us help identify this man and get justice for the victim.
RT and SHARE this face across the entire country to help track him down NOW! 🇬🇧🔥

Matt Frei, "The number of asylum seekers living in hotels has halved in a year"
- If Labour could do this, why didn't the Conservatives? -
Did the Conservatives create this anti asylum seeker situation to stoke division in the country and to perpetuate a culture war?
I have been, like many fans, frustrated at times with T.C.over the last 2 or 3 seasons with his play: good one minute - lack of concentration the next.
Some call for him to be dropped; his fan base is unsure about him. But how many of us have seen a huge improvement in him this season?
I am not just talking about his play these last 3 games; something more important than that - I have never seen T.C. smile so much.
In past seasons, he seemed shy and quiet; this season so far, I have never seen him smile so much, and he is actively enjoying his football, fantastic for the team and so, so pleasing to us fans. Great to see, and he is one of our own.
