With the publication of the Ockenden Review our thoughts are with the babies and families whose experiences, courage and persistence led to this report. We also recognise the healthcare professionals who continue to strive to provide the safest and highest quality care in often challenging circumstances.
The Review presents an important opportunity to strengthen neonatal care across the UK, including through its immediate and essential actions, that the BAPM Family Integrated Care (FICare) Framework be implemented across neonatal units.
FICare is an evidence-informed approach that is associated with improved experiences and outcomes for babies and families. The challenge now is supporting consistent implementation.
In response, the newly formed UK Family Integrated Care Committee brings together clinicians, researchers, families and partner organisations from across the UK. Working alongside existing structures, we are committed to supporting the implementation of FICare, sharing learning, promoting collaboration and helping translate evidence into practice.
Together, we can build on the recommendations of the Ockenden Review to strengthen neonatal care for babies, families and the professionals who care for them.

A big thank you to Amanda Lawes, OT & Ei SMART volunteer, for sharing how Ei SMART brings OT, physio & SLT together to support babies born prematurely.
She also highlights the importance of our leaflets; clear, practical resources parents can revisit in their own time. 💛

Grace’s mother shares how early sensory care and skin-to-skin contact transformed her confidence as a new parent in the NICU. With support from Neonatal OT at Singleton Hospital, she was introduced to the Ei SMART approach and later attended our baby course.

Parent power + the just right challenge = Ei SMART in action!
In our recent baby course, a mum guided by our therapist helped her little one sit & reach with her less-used hand. A beautiful moment of strength, confidence & connection.
